Red Sox RHP Pedro Martinez out 4-6 more weeks
July 13, 2001 1130pm est

FLUSHING, NEW YORK (TICKER) -- Boston Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez, baseball's best pitcher over the last three seasons, will miss another four to six weeks due to his nagging right shoulder injury.

The Red Sox announced Thursday that Martinez, who already is on the disabled list, will spend the next seven to 10 days strengthening his rotator cuff and right shoulder area before beginning a throwing program.

With Martinez following the schedule, team physician Dr. Bill Morgan indicated that the three-time Cy Young Award winner will not pitch until at least the middle of August.

Martinez underwent tests at Shea Stadium earlier Thursday. He was placed on the 15-day DL on June 27 with soreness in his right shoulder. It is the third straight year that Martinez has landed on the disabled list at midseason.

Martinez is 7-2 with a 2.26 ERA in 15 starts, allowing 72 hits while striking out a league-leading 150 in 103 2/3 innings.

In his second season with the Red Sox in 1999, Martinez was on the DL with a sore right shoulder from July 19-August 2. Last year, he spent two weeks on the DL with a strained muscle in his left side.

The injury-plagued Red Sox have 10 players on the disabled list, including star shortstop Nomar Garciaparra.

Boston (51-37) began the second half of the season with a 4-2 loss to the New York Mets.
