update following the Detroit Red Wings practice Tuesday at the Toyota Sports Center:
- Forward Valtteri Filppula is out for Wednesday's game in Los Angeles (10 p.m., Fox Sports Net Detroit) due to a left shoulder sprain. It seems highly unlikely that he'll play Thursday in San Jose as well. He said an MRI showed no significant damage, however, and doesn't believe he'll be out long.
- Forward Johan Franzen (sore hip flexor) will return Wednesday, after missing seven games.
- Coach Mike Babcock said the status of defensemen Kyle Quincey (left ankle) and Brendan Smith (sprained shoulder) will be determined after the morning skate. Both said they feel like they can play.
- Babcock said Jimmy Howard will start against the Kings and Jonas Gustavsson will start Thursday, barring a setback.
