BEAM ME UP SCOTTY!
I have a bet with my buddy here concerning whether or not in the NFL when a team wins a coin toss, do they:

Defer to the other team: (kick it)
Or do they recieve.

I always thought they would normally (9 out of 10), kick the ball. He insists that they always (8-10) choose to recieve.

We both admitted not witnessing enough game beginning coin tosses to know for sure, but we both are insistent that we are correct.

Tell us who is right and why?

Well I think the first choice would depend on if there is a wind factor at all... If theres a wind factor then you have to pick the side so that you get the wind in the 2nd and 4th qtrs... the longer qtrs...

If there is no wind factor than theoretically it shouldn't matter if you kick or recieve as the opposite will happen in the 2nd half....

However this is just a note from playing Madden 2003 online.... 95% of the time whoever wins the toss will choose to Kick.... including myself... Dunno why... but I guess to me its because I hate starting the 2nd half and giving away the ball... at the start it doesn't seem to matter as much as theres a full game left....

There is no 'deferring the choice' in the NFL -- that is why teams always take the ball in the first half.
