UMass basketball team plane makes emergency stop

BOSTON - A charter plane carrying the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team made an emergency landing at the Albany International Airport when smoke was detected in the cockpit.

The Albany Times-Union reports that the World Atlantic Airlines MD80 aircraft landed safely at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday with 35 players, coaches and others. They were flying to Bradford, Pa., from Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, Mass., for a Wednesday game against St. Bonaventure in Olean.

The Federal Aviation Administration reported no injuries. UMass spokesman Jason Yellin said he could smell smoke throughout the plane. He said the team was unsure how it would get to Olean, 240 miles west of Albany.

FAA spokesman Jim Peters said the agency will investigate the cause of the smoke problem on Wednesday.
