Repent, shown winning the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, had a fast workout Wednesday.

With the Gulfstream surface doing a Jekyll & Hyde transformation, Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up Repent blazed 5 furlongs Wednesday in :58 flat, working in company with stablemate Take Charge Lady. The Kentucky Jockey Club winner galloped out 6 furlongs in 1:11 4/5.
"I told the rider I was looking for 1:00 or 1:01," trainer Kenny McPeek said. "They had scraped the track Tuesday afternoon, and the only work before the first break this morning was a half in :47 1/5. That made me nervous about this work. I wasn't happy they went that fast, but I followed both horses around for a while after the work and they both came out it great and cooled out beautifully. Repent looked as if he was doing it pretty easily; he's just that good a horse. We're definitely looking at the Risen Star, but we still have to work out the transportation situation."

Repent's stablemate Harlan's Holiday, runner-up in the Holy Bull Stakes, turned in a sharp 5-furlong breeze in 1:00 Tuesday morning in preparation for the Feb. 16 Fountain of Youth Stakes. It was the fastest of the 22 five-furlong works on the tab, giving some indication just how dramatically the track changed in one day. "He came out the work super," McPeek said. "I'm in an enviable position to have two horses this talented."

I really like Harlan's Holiday for the Fountain of Youth. We'll have to see what kind of odds he'll be. I'm guessing not big. I may have to search for a nice 15-1 or 20-1 to use underneath in the exacta.

I agree with you, Valuist.

Harlan's Holiday is one impressive horse, and you're right, he'll not be an overlay. Good idea about searching for overlay underneath. I'll be watching for your ideas.

I think Siphonic will be getting alot of the action in the first derby pool, and maybe rightly so, but I'll be looking elsewhere.

The big time 2YOs are usually overbet; I like solid 2YOs who show rapid improvement. The Fountain of Youth, then Florida Derby and the Santa Anita races should show us the major contenders.
