You've said some ridiculous things, but this may be at the top of the list.

How is the US defaulting not a real thing?

I don't understand why we don't just transfer the balance to one of those credit cards offering 0% interest on balance transfers.

Shit, I get a dozen of those offers a month, surely the White House gets them too.

Most of the analysis has focused on the mind-boggling stupidity of Republicans in Congress, who blundered into a debacle that failed in exactly the way they were warned it would. The episode will be retold and fought over for years to come, perfectly emblemizing the party?s internal disorganization, mindless belligerence, and confinement within an ideological echo chamber that sealed out important warnings of failure. A grassroots revolt forced Republicans to shut down the government two weeks before the debt ceiling deadline, serving to weaken the party's standing at the moment they hoped to hold the default gun to Obama's head. (It's possible they lesson they'll take away from their failure will only be not to shut down the government and threaten default at the same time, requiring another showdown.)

But it also represents a huge Democratic success ? or, at least, the closest thing to success that can be attained under the circumstances. Of the Republican Party?s mistakes, the most rational was its assumption that Democrats would ultimately bend. This was not merely their own recycled certainty ? ?nobody believes that,? a confident Paul Ryan insisted of Obama?s claims he wouldn?t be extorted ? but widespread, world-weary conventional wisdom. Democrats would have to pay a ransom. Republicans spent weeks prodding for every weakness. Would Senate Democrats from deep red states be pried away? Would Obama fold in the face of their threat?

Part of what undergirded Democratic unity went beyond a (correct) calculation that it would be dangerous to pay any ransom at all. Democrats seemed to share a genuine moral revulsion at the tactics and audacity of a party that had lost a presidential election by 5 million votes, lost another chance to win a favorable Senate map, and lost the national House vote demanding the winning party give them its way without compromise.

I'm clearly very conservative, and clearly nowhere near as ignorant as you. I think you should retract that statement. Just because there are still (admittedly fewer and fewer) people who do not want to live without rules that does not make us "seriously stupid".

What is the difference between a Republican and Democrat?
Both parties of these stooges take and spend our money
They just have different groups of people they have to bend over for

It's all a big Ponzi Scheme
We have to pay for the party
But never get an invitation

It happened slowly, didn?t it? The change in the Republican Party? I don?t know. Maybe it?s nostalgia. There have always been the wild, vicious voices of the right. The devil on the shoulder of the conservative movement that whispers in its ear, ?burn it down, burn it down.? But those voices were to be ignored, humored, tolerated, placated, or just deceived. That was the way of things, and we were protected by the obvious: people who believe foolish things tend to be easy to fool.

Then it all changed. The Republican elite caught a ride on the tiger. But the tiger got sick of waiting for the gazelles it was promised, the gazelles that were always one election away. The tiger was hungry and angry and tired of being used and the longer it waited the more appetizing the elite on its back became. So the tiger got a radio station and a news channel. The tiger got organized and mobilized. And finally the tiger realized it didn?t need someone kicking its sides telling it which way to run and who to eat and when to eat and why it wasn?t time to eat and the time to eat would come, don?t worry, you?ll eat soon enough.

So the tiger ate its master and now here we are.

America needs a strong, rational, positive, practical conservative movement. It needs that bulwark against liberal delusion and hubris. It needs a voice that says we are imperfect, that life is complex, that government can create need even as it meets need, that you can?t fix everything and freedom is worth some danger and sorrow. And there are smart, honest conservatives at the ready to be that voice, to help govern practically and sincerely with that voice, but they are drowned out by the guttural scream of craven utopians raging against reality.

This moment in American political life is insane. That a group of narrow-minded zealots could push us to the brink of economic ruin, that they maintain a base of support in their frenzied, quixotic, incompetent gambit, that there is an apparatus that exists to defend this kind of nonsense?it came on us slowly but it is no less an emergency. This is broken. This cannot go on.

And if you can?t see that then it?s not just the world that?s gone mad. You're crazy too.
