We knew this day was coming soon...got to see him several time at hoop clinics...being a Al McGuire fan loved his stories...he and Raymonds did all the X's and O's at Marquette...Al is my all time favorite coach...His book " Life on a napkin " is a classic.. o...I have so many notes from Rick's clinic....always his topic was the Triangle 2...I loved it because it was a gimmick defense and I love gimmicks esp since I had the box and one down...he could do stand up comedy if he didn't coach...he had a lot of controversies and was brutal with his players... on the court..off the court he loved them...he had the St Louis bishop want to throw him out of the cathloic church for his pro life...he made comments like he walks on nude beaches..lives in a hotel,etc..pretty funny stuff.. Notre Dame was intrested in him but passed...then the USC job he takes and a few hours later quits...he has so many lines....this are off the top of my head but he always lost to Kentucky in the finals{ no idea what yr} Pitino says to the press Utah is the favorite in this game vs Kentucky...Majerus's line was classic.." if we get into a sumo wrestling match then he is the under dog..because I'll crush him...but on the court I'm in trouble"...and then his most famous line after losing to Kentucky...." when I die please bury me at the finish line at Church Hill Downs..."

He did a great job at St louie..academics was very important for him and his players...he had an effect on my life....when he wrote his book : life on a napkin"....he explained why..how many times when you go out to eat with other coaches, etc do you ask for a napkin to write down the plays so you won't forget them...I have about 6 napkins from the Pleasantville Diner in NJ with Pete Carills Princeton motion offense...after the clinic with Pete trying to explain it...never could use it because my players didn't have enough upstairs to use it...including their coach.

RIP Rick...you will be missed..you and Al are up there sharing stories...and St Peter is laughing his ass off...

You hit the nail, Box. Was always a fan of Rick. A bigger fan of Al. Made several trips to see Marquette back in the days of "Dean the Dream". Hung around after a game and caught a brief interview. A class act and funny man. Coaching biz has certainly taken a turn south with the care and passion of coaches to players. Many simply treat players as pawns to a bigger job and check.

These are two gentlemen to emulate. :sadwave:
