Going for a week in January. If anybody has any must sees, or things to do it would be appreciated.

Or I guess things to stay away from.

Iberostar Quetzal First time doing an all inclusive.

Good choice. The Tucan and Quetzel mirror each other so you can go back and forth between the two for lunch or dinner and the shows.

Playacar is about 1.2 miles from the resort. All the resorts are in a gated setting and you can walk there if you want. It is a must do. Bargan with the locals it's fun and they expect it. Great deals and it's a great time. They are very friendly.

We went to Chichen-Itza (pyramids and ruins) when we were there and it was a great trip but a long day. 12 hours but something I'll never forget.

You can get trips out of the lobby in the AM from your transfer people.

2 years ago we booked a Catamaran trip to Isles Majeres for $70 bucks a piece and it was a great deal but again a long day.

How many excursions are you planning?

Hi Morris, thanks for the reply. Definately plan on doing the pyramids and ruins. As far as total number of excursions, I'm not sure. We will be with a small group, and without any first hand knowledge we were just going to play it by ear.

Again I really appreciate the helpful advice.

Hi Morris, yes it is my first time. I appreciate all the helpful advice. I don't want to miss anything good. Sometimes word of mouth is a little slow. We will be there for 8 days, but the first and last really don't count.

Is there anything I should stay away from? Bad areas, getting to far away from the resort.

We are all going in blind. The travel agent said it was nice and we would enjoy it. Taking her word for it.

thanks again

Once you land it will be about 2-3 hours to get thru Immigration and customs. Then go pick up your luggage. If you can't find it a first look for the bags that were already taken off the carosel. Keep in mind yopu have probably been there for 3 hours.

After you have your bags follow everyone going out. Most have been there before and you'll see it's pretty easy. You'll go thru a set of double glass doors and then you run into a bunch of people (land sharks) that will offer you free excursions in exchange for your time to look at time shares. Just say NO Thank You or just nod your head no and keep walking outside.

Once you get outside the first thing you will feel is the warm humid air and the wind blowing in the palm trees!! Greatest feeling after a long trip.

There will be a bunch of people holding up signs for taxis etc. but you booked all inclusive so you should have ground transportation included?

Did you book with ground transportation included. Did you book with a travel agency?

Ok so you get outside and look or just ask for your rep. It will be a gang of people outside behind ropes but its never been a problem for us to find our rep. Someone will want to take your bags and take you to your shuttle. It's like $1-$2 a bag but if you just want to do it yourself just say no. The shuttles are in a horse-u shaped lot right outside the doors. Just find your rep and check in with him. i always tip about 2 bucks to the guy that gets you on the shuttle too. You can get cold beer right there to for the ride. He will also give you a time to meet with a rep at the resort. Keep this appointment he will set up your pick up time when you leave to go back home!

Once you're on the shuttle it's about an hour ride to the resort so enjoy and look at all the country and surroundings. Talk to the driver they are friendly and try to use some spanish if you can.

Once at the resort , leave your bags and go to the desk. At Check in they will give you a map of the resort where the restaurants and bars are etc. Once you get in your room LEAVE IMMEDIATLY and go to the beach find a spot at the pool and get a drink at one of the many bars. Don't go back to your room untill bedtime.

We have been up at 2am to catch the flight and not gone to bed till 2am and we're in our 50"s.

The 1st day eat at the buffet and catch the show that starts about 9:30.

Different theme for the buffet and show every nite.

You have to make reservations for the restaurants in the AM and stand in line. We usually just do the buffets and one or two nites we'll do the restaurants.

They have vendors that come in 2 nites a week selling their wares. You can deal with them too. Don't miss the guys spray painting or the guy painting with his pinky!

Going for a week in January. If anybody has any must sees, or things to do it would be appreciated.

Or I guess things to stay away from.

I've been twice, once at an all-inclusive. I'll never do an all-inclusive again, but for your 1st visit there its not a bad way to go.

I'd highly suggest seeing chichen itza; if your resort offers a tour directly from your hotel I'd do it that way. Jump on the bus 1st thing in the AM, drive over--2-3 hours if I remember right--see the ruins have some lunch and then back at the resort around dinner time.
If the offer a tour of some of the Cenotes in the area, I highly recommend dong that. We went on a snorkeling tour of an underground river that was really cool.
Info. here: http://www.cancuntoday.net/cenotes/cenotes.php

There are also Cenotes that you can just swim in as well. Many of the chichen itza tours have a stop at one which is really nice after climbing all over ruins in the hot sun and then having to sit on the bus for the ride back to the resort.

Its below zero here today; I wish I was heading south sometime this winter. Enjoy!

We went a few years ago and LOVED it!

It was less than half of the cost of our honeymoon and a much better trip. Very short flight compared to going to more southern islands.

It is my big recommended trip to people now.

I ain't going to try and compete with Morris on the info beat, though!! :00hour

pd1, you'll have a great time. I've been to that area three times now, and really like it. We've done a lot of different things, and I have some suggestions.

Last trip we went to Xcaret - it was terrific, an all-day adventure full of history, animals, plenty of sights and sounds, a great area by the ocean with awesome surf and sitting areas, plenty to eat and drink. A tiring day, but very much worth it.

Also, for a quieter time, but still an awesome experience, was Xel-Ha. This is a huge inland cove-like snorkeling area, and also a kind of national park. Lot of great hiking areas, wildlife, a lazy river/tubing thing with cliff jumping, lots of good food and plenty to drink. The snorkeling is terrific, it's a combo of ocean water and fresh water, it's pretty warm, and very clear, you can really see a lot of fish and stuff. A great way to spend the day, both of them.

We took a parasailing trip out of Puerto Aventuras, and also a huge catamaran trip out of that area. Kind of a neat private community, with some flavor.

For a nice evening, you can head down to Playa Del Carmen. Some GREAT food and drinking opportunities, lots of live bands and people watching, plenty of shopping. Really a nice place to spend an evening, especially with a group of people wanting to party a little.

We've been to Cozumel a couple times, really like that place. A good place to spend a day into the early evening, food, shopping, day trips, they have a great private beach there that costs some money but is all inclusive, lots of stuff to do there. But, most of it can probably be found at your all-inclusive.

A couple other notes: I found it inexpensive and easy to get around on the public transportation. They have little vans that run up and down the Riviera Maya area, that are only a couple bucks or so a pop. A great way to get around, and it's mostly just locals on them going to and from work, etc. I'm sure you can catch one close to your resort.

Those are just some "extra" ideas besides your resort, which will be good enough for most of your time already, and it's all paid for. Study up on your resort, check out TripAdvisor.com and post any questions you have. That's a great travel site, and you can really plan out your adventures by that posting board which is dedicated to travel (no competition for Jack, I don't think.).

Post any other questions you have. Sounds like you're getting some good ideas, and I'm sure you'll have a great time. Wish I was going back this year.

Chadman gave some great info and we stayed at Xcaret 3 years ago. It is another must do if you have the time. The show at nite was awesome.

Other things you can do that are half day trips are horse back riding through the jungle and on the beach and swimming with dolphins.

Like Redsfan said you can book right in the resort lobby. That is the way we do it. It gives you a chance to pick good weather days and good times for you.

This depends on you but we never book more than 2 excursions for the 8 days that we are there. Just gives us time to enjoy the beach and unwind.
