You do realize he's been at UNC for about 13 years now...
I'm a huge Carolina fan and have bitched about Roy several times. And its hard to bitch about all he's accomplished....his name combined with the 2 schools he's been at combined with how much of a "player's coach" he is....he can get just about any recruit he wants more or less.
The main ones that can compete or Coach K and Caliapar....Coach K adjusted several years ago and it helped get Duke more talent/athleticism....you gotta be able to get guys to the next level...and fast...one and done or similar...if you're gonna get the top talent.
I feel like Roy is finally doing some of the things last couple years that I used to complain about. For years, seems like all he would do is run-run-run. Fast break and secondary break with elite talent. Half court basketball was often bad and defense non-existent but they would out-talent to wins until late in the tourney and just get out-coached.
They are playing awesome defense last couple years and the half court offense is much improved.
The other thing I've always hated is that he simply will not call a timeout and has no idea that momentum exists and that you can at least try to "stop the bleeding". The 2 worst losses that I can remember....the Georgetown loss late in the tourney years ago....I think it was a 10-point lead they blew and lost in OT. The Kansas loss after that in the Final 4 was awful. Kansas went on something like a 23-2 run and he never called a timeout. Then he wore a Kansas shirt Monday night at the title game.
I loved that team last year and I feel like they got a ton of cheap fouls called on them, esp in the first half. A hell of a comeback...and one hell of a shot by Marcus Paige to tie it. I thought for sure if they tried to play D at all on that last play, they'd lose by free throws...that's how the game was called. But the dude hit a 25-footer at the buzzer. Not the best D but yeah, ref's wanted to call a foul so at least they made the guy hit it. Heart Breaking.
Overall, there's definitely things about Roy that are frustrating. I feel like Coach K, much as I hate him, would have 5 titles or more over the last 13 years with all that talent. But still....2 titles and consistently at the top of the ACC...tournament runs every year....it could be a whole lot worse. But, after all that rambling....I know what you mean.
