(WGR 550) -- The Sabres' 5-4 Monday loss to the Penguins may have been the recipe for an entertaining broadcast, but head coach Lindy Ruff said that sort of a hockey requires a lot of risk, and takes coaches to the brink of insanity.

"That is the nightmare scenario," Ruff said during his weekly 8 a.m. Tuesday appearance on The Howard Simon Show. "It was kind of a throwback game where both teams got in the situation of trading rushes... It was definitely exciting... It's not so exciting when you see the goals go in that we gave up."

The former NHL forward and blueliner was asked which style of hockey he prefers: defensive or offensive?

"I prefer winning," Ruff said. "I like seeing real good plays in games, and I thought our team made some real good plays. I went through part of the game on the airplane coming back. We did a lot of good things, but we just went after some too hard... and you want to prevent those situations against good teams."

The Sabres will face a hot team with healthy stars on Wednesday at HSBC Arena, and the Senators have given them fits.

"I've watched a lot of their games," Ruff said. "They have really locked down a style away from the puck... They got all their good players back. They really do have some high-end talent."

Ottawa's had Buffalo's number, and the Ruff was asked whether the Senators are in his players' heads.

"That's a tough question, and it'll be a tough answer because of the results we've had recently," Ruff said. "As a team, we're going to have a discussion today about that situation and about the way we've played against them. I think there is some frustration with the fact that we've played some good games against them and lost... but I look at it as a great opportunity against the team that's going real well."

Sens take it 'game by game'

The Senators want to keep on rolling.

Riding a franchise-record, nine-game winning streak, the club wrapped up a 45-minute practice Tuesday at Scotiabank Place and then shuffled off to Buffalo to prepare for a big divisional matchup against the Sabres at the HSBC Arena.

With seven games remaining before the Olympic break, the Senators have a chance to close the gap in the Northeast Division and try to catch Sabres for the top spot. Ottawa trails Buffalo by five points.

Goaltender Brian Elliott will make the start and is trying win his eighth straight. Pascal Leclaire is going to dress as the backup, returning from a concussion.

?We?re just taking it game-by-game,? said winger Chris Neil. ?It doesn?t matter how many games we win in a row, as long as we?re winning.

"It?s whenever you lose five in a row, those are the ones you remember. It?s not the winning eight or nine. As long you got a winning feeling in the dressing room, that?s half of the battle.?

There will be one lineup change. Centre Jesse Winchester is going to return after missing 11 games with a knee injury to replace winger Nick Foligno, who broke his foot blocking a shot in Saturday?s 3-2 OT win over Montreal.

Defenceman Anton Volchenkov was back on the ice after missing Monday?s practice. He is expected to be fine. That means Shean Donovan and Alex Picard are going to be healthy scratches.
