Limbaugh will be voice of fan on ESPN NFL show (ESPN.COM)

National talk radio personality Rush Limbaugh will join ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown to provide the voice of the fan and to spark debate on the show, the network announced Monday.

Limbaugh will appear weekly and make his debut when Sunday NFL Countdown premieres Sept. 7.

"Football is like life and I know life," Limbaugh said in a statement. "I am a big fan of the NFL and now I get to do what every football fan would love to do. I get to take my observations from the living room couch to the ESPN studios and talk football with the best journalists and players in the business."

Limbaugh, who will appear either on the show's Bristol, Conn., set or via satellite, will provide a weekly opinion piece on an aspect of the NFL making news that week, and participate in impromptu exchanges with the analysts and challenging their opinions on various issues. Limbaugh will be allotted three challenge opportunities to use at his discretion during the show.

"Rush is a great communicator and a fan's fan," said Mark Shapiro, ESPN's executive vice president of programming and production. "His acute sense of what's on the minds of his listeners combined with his ability to entertain and serve as a lightning rod for lively discussion makes him the perfect fit for this new role.

"We want to give fans a voice, and Rush is the person who can do it."

As host of the top-rated Rush Limbaugh Show, Limbaugh has established a following of almost 20 million listeners in more than 650 markets worldwide. Limbaugh has written two national bestsellers, "The Way Things Ought to Be" and "See, I Told You So." One of his first jobs was as director of group sales for the Kansas City Royals in 1979.

This makes me puke. I dont get from ESPNs standpoint how you can take a guy that polarizes people so much like Rush and expect people to watch him comment on football. This guy is so far right of right, I dont know what they are counting on. Maybe their target audience is the demographic who doesnt listen to political talk radio anyway and therefore wont really know Rush?

"Football is like life and I know life" this was his prepared written statement? How witty, I wonder how great he will be live. And what are the issues of the week going to be? If there's a story about a player not supporting his kid out of a first marriage that week, will Rush get to lecture on family values? If there's a story that comes out about a former player who's broke and homeless, will Rush get to lecture on the welfare state? With that "challenge" system it makes it sound like they are trying to turn it into a gameshow. Eh, maybe it's that I live in DC and even though I love politics get way too much of it in my daily life, but when you push this guy into the football arena, I think it has disaster written all over it.

Personally Stuart Scott drove me to Fox's pre-game show a couple of years ago, so this doesnt really affect me. But it certainly isnt a reason for me to switch back. BOOYAH!

i agree

i agree

a very poor choice....and i`m a far cry from being liberal....and about stuart scott.....the only thing worse than this choice might be all the cynical, smart aleck condescending yuppie p-icks manning espn these days......absolutely the worst group of on screen so-called repoters i`ve ever witnessed.....and those commercials.....so contrived and unfunny...yucccch....

even chris berman is starting to wear thin.....anybody that saw any of the home run derby knows what i`m talking about.....if i hear one more home run heading into lake michigan that lands 5 rows deep into the seats i think i`ll puke....

He won't be in the booth. Replacing Parcells right?

I like Rush so I'm looking forward to his "expertise".

Besides, he's "talent on loan from God" so he's gotta be good right? :)

politics aside, which will be the case on this show, Rush knows a heck of a lot about football, and he is a huge fan of the NFL. I think he'll do a good job.

I guess we have to give him a chance. But Im wonder who will be able to shut him up long enough for someone else to say anything. Sounds like a ploy by ESPN for attention.

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I like the idea. Why is it such an issue? When I look at most of the people covering the sport's show's from comedian's, bimbo's,junkie's,washed up, has been(or never was) athlete's,I for one think the IQ was just raised a few notches. I'm certainly not going to bash the guy before he has the oppotunity to do his job.

i think rush started out as a sports announcer before he made it big. i have heard about rush more than actually listening to him, so i'm willing to givve him a chance.

freelancc,

i don't think that espn renewed sharpe's contract.
