Melick: Saban wants Greg McElroy to throw caution to the wind
By Ray Melick -- The Birmingham News
November 03, 2009, 5:45AM

Alabama Coach Nick Saban and Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy (12) watch second-quarter action against North Texas at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009. (The Birmingham News / Mark Almond) Alabama coach Nick Saban has made it clear he's not happy with the Tide's passing attack the past few weeks.

Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy said Monday he has been pleased with the passing game.

If I didn't know better, I'd say there was a disconnect some*where along the chain of com*mand, somewhere either between Saban and offensive coordinator Jim McElwain, or between McEl*wain and McElroy.

Come to think of it, I can't say that I know better, because every link of the chain between Saban and the players is off limits.

But what we do know is Saban has made it clear he wants his quarterback to quit focusing so much on "taking what the defense gives" and be more willing to take some chances and throw the ball downfield, even if it results in an incomplete pass or, worse, a turn*over.

"It's a point of emphasis for us," Saban said last week. "We need to do it. Just because we don't have success doesn't mean it doesn't have an effect on the game. We used to play the Raiders  when I was in pro ball. They'd have two fast guys. They were going to throw them the ball five or six times in a game and they were going to run deep down the field and you had to cover them.

"But then that guy that's playing them, whether they catch it or not, it makes him play different all the other plays in the game. It's not just about the results sometimes. It's about how it affects everything else."

In other words, if Alabama is going to get back to cracking open opposing defenses -- starting with LSU on Saturday -- McElroy has to give them something more to worry about than just stopping tailback Mark Ingram and the Tide running game.

But McElroy says he believes the passing game has been fine the past three weeks. He said he hasn't thrown deep because the defenses haven't given him the chance to throw deep, and McElroy is justifi*ably proud of having thrown only three interceptions, tied for fewest in the league.

Saban, however, sounds like a coach who would rather see a few more risks being taken.

"To me, you want to play aggres*sively and think (about) what you have to gain -- that's your motiva*tion," Saban said. "I know it's easy to say, but that's what we would rather focus on rather than cre*ating a lot of fear and negative mo*tivation about 'here's what's going to happen if you don't,' or 'I'm going to threaten you with what's going to happen if you don't.' "That doesn't work with my kids. It doesn't work with my play*ers. It doesn't work with anything.

. . . We've been in some big games before, and so have our players.

They need to understand what they need to do to have success in those kind of games, and worrying about what you're going to lose is not one of them."

If there is a disconnect between what Saban wants and what his of*fense has been giving him, don't expect it to become public.

Or to last.

"We have the weapons (to attack downfield)," Saban said. "We have the plays to do it. We just need to do it. We're going to do it. That's no criticism of anybody."

It's just a point of emphasis that Saban expects to produce more points.

LSU going to shock this overrated Bama team this week. Mark it down.

:mj07:
Over rated? I thought they have done pretty well against the schedule...not like they are lining up against Fla A&M everyweek, opened with VT...thats game alone could of fucked the season away. Gauranteeing a win here Cie is a liitle extra, I understand you back them and love your school, but Jefferson has to learn how to move the offense against a decent defense. If the flu bug hits Bamas defense and sickens 6 guys, LSU has a chance.:box2:
I could use a hat!! All u have to do is ask.

Don't be silly, my thoughts on this game have nothing to do with the fact that I went to LSU and have held season tickets for years. I challenge you, or anyone else on here, to point out a single instance in which I was a homer. In fact, I wager against LSU and Saints far more often that not.

Bama has not been in a grinder, while LSU has. What is going to happen to McElroy if this is a tight game in the 4Q? Bama offense has plateaued once opponents realized that McElroy has a hard time getting the ball downfield unless receiver is wide open, and preferably stationary. LSU matches up physically with Bama, while Ole Miss and other teams did not. LSU is improving weekly on defense, particularly at LB. The LSU secondary is vastly underrated.

Jefferson is improving week to week, while McElroy, has hit a wall. The main concern is LSU interior OL, and while that is a huge problem, I think that LSU will hit battle in Tuscaloosa this week. Think about it, many these LSU players are former natioinal champs and highly recruited HS studs. They have been told all season that they cannot compete with Bama, and that Bama is goinf to meet FLorida in the SEC Championship. You have to be kidding yourself if you do not expect LSU to play their best game of the season in terms of energy.

Good luck on your action.

No beef Cie, and yes a greed you do play both sides..I noticed you popped in on a few threads and LIKE lsu to win so I was poking a little. Do think it will be a good game, not exactly sure if its gonna come to the 4th quarter or not, but with that Bama hasnt lit it up either. LSU has picked up the offense but it has been to the likes of Auburn and Tulane..something in me says Nikki wants to "show" and prove and this game thus far this season will be used as the barometer for Bama...if they win then it will become Florida IMO. Enjoy the game:toast:

I havnt been able to watch that many LSU games but alot of Alabama. I know that LSU is a good team and they will be completely energized.

When you mention Jefferson though I cringe as I do not trust him to be able to drive the LSU team downfield or get the needed first downs they will need when Alabama stuffs the run.

The big question to me is if McElroy will be able to brreak out of his offensive slump and throw the fawking ball downfield for some big yards.

This game may come down to special teams. Fumbles , interceptions and run backs of punts and kickoffs will probably decide the game. If thats the case, this game will be close. That means it makes sense to take LSU and the points.

At this point I cannot make a play on this game. I want to watch this game close and see if Alabama can survive and win. That will tell me alot if they can beat Florida if they get to the SEC champion game.

Caution to the wind:shrug: Nick Saban is a control freak and I am looking at a tight classic SEC showdown that is decided by a less than a TD. Everyone is placing the pressure on Bama's QB? I think the pressure will be on LSU's QB. If Jefferson plays like he did against Auburn, they will have a chance. I see this as a roll the dice game and I give the dice to Bama.......... God that hurts me to say as an Auburn fan.:moon:

Both QB's are average and which ever one plays up to its ability then that team will probably win. I do think that LSU has better talent on the offensive side of that ball but that wont win games unless you have a QB who can get the ball to those guys.

I expect a low scoring game unless either QB plays out his azz..
