Here's a new one...I've never heard of a team ripping out it's old field in the middle of a season before... bizarre...
They'll be playing on brand new "Astro-Play" on Sunday. This is the same stuff they have in Buffalo. From what I have seen of it it's like a cheaper version of the new type of turf they have in Detroit, Seattle, etc. No rubber in-between the blades. And I believe it gets more slippery when wet (not that that will ever be a factor in a dome). But I saw a preseason Detroit-Buffalo game on TV when it was raining and the players were sliding all over the place and having trouble making quick cuts... (that's something to keep in mind the next time it rains in Buffalo
).
Still odd that they do this now. May take away a bit of the home field advantage for the Saints, since they've never set foot on the stuff??

Sure, the new AstroPlay field in the Superdome might add years to careers, but kicker John Carney and punter Mitch Berger aren?t too happy. They both stand to lose distance on kicks and punts because the new surface is thicker, deeper and softer than the old AstroTurf field. Saints coach Jim Haslett said Carney probably will lose about 3 yards of distance on field goals. "AstroTurf is a very clean surface where there is no drag and your foot comes through the ball," Carney told the Times Picayune. "This surface, especially with the rubber, creates drag on your cleat as it comes through the ball. So it's a little trickier to kick off of than AstroTurf, and at times trickier to kick off of than regular grass."

Bummer. But for the sake of Deuce McAllister and the rest of the offense, we'll take the new surface over the old any day. Blame it on the field instead of the rain next time Carney is short on a 50-yarder.
