Saints coach Sean Payton said Drew Brees and the starters will play the first quarter Thursday night.



It is a surprising decision considering Brees has not played in a preseason finale since 2006, but Payton obviously believes his offense needs more work. Considering how poorly the offensive line has played this preseason, it could be a decision he comes to regret.

Even if the starters see extensive snaps, it would not be surprising if Brees plays just one series or is held out altogether.

Browns coach Hue Jackson said his starters will play in the preseason finale Thursday.



Teams usually rest their starters in the final preseason game, but several coaches have decided to break that mold this year. "I feel comfortable that we need to play our starters on both sides of the ball," Jackson said. "We need to get better as a football team as we continue to move forward." It is unlikely a quarter of football against backups will spark a bottom-five roster to a winning season, but it is worth a shot.
