The Los Angeles Clippers acquired veteran point guard Sam Cassell and a lottery-protected 2006 first-round draft pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves for guards Marko Jaric and Lionel Chalmers Friday.

Cassell, who has been in the NBA 12 years, averaged 13.5 points, 5.1 assists and 2.7 rebounds with the T'wolves last season.

"We're excited to bring in a veteran player like Sam who brings nine years of playoff experience and two championships," said Elgin Baylor, the Clippers' vice president of basketball operations. "The addition of Sam strengthens our backcourt. He's a big-time scorer who is one of the best in the league when it comes to taking and making the big shot in the closing moments of a ballgame." Cassell, the 24th overall selection in the 1993 draft, has averaged 16.2 points, 6.2 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game over his career, which includes stops in Houston, Phoenix, Dallas, New Jersey, Milwaukee and Minnesota.

Jaric averaged 9.9 points, 6.1 assists and 3.2 boards per game last year.

Chalmers, who was Los Angeles' second-round pick in 2004, averaged 3.1 points per game last season.
