Don't forget the season is longer this year due to the Spa celebrating being open for 150 years, Bob.
I'd bet the crowds will be their normal size once August rolls around.

It's the same 42 days that it has been. The 150 year thing is all hype really nothing different than in past years. Unless you want to go to a $500 gala.

Certainly saw plenty of signs and articles in the papers when we were out there a couple of weeks ago...
Did the season start earlier or does it always start in Mid-July?
Thought it was around Aug 1 when the Spa opened....

Hey Mike, they used to have a 24 doy meet that's where they coined the phrase "The August place to be".

For about the last 20 years or so it runs from mid July to Labor day. 40 0r 42 days.

The big 150 year celebration is all hype.

There's a porch decorating contest
Buy an ice cream cone get one free
Rev War encampment......they do it every year for free anyway
Art fest
Ice cream social
Seabusquit film fest

The only thing worth doing is the parade. Maybe.

Travers day will be huge this year. A potential showdown of the 3 triple crown winners who are all pointing to that race. Plus, if Verrazano wins the Haskell I imagine he would point to the Travers as well. If Oxbow and Palace Malice running this weekend come out in good shape, it'll be happening. Definitely going to be one of the best races for 3 year olds in a long time, and could very well decide the 3 year old champion. I don't know how many the Spa can hold but it'll be jammed to capacity and then some on Travers day.

I had season tickets for years 1985 - 1993 every Wed and Sat.:0074
(then I had to move)

Travers day is always packed. Everyone goes to picnic and party. The track is crowded with 30,000 and I've seen over 50,000 there. Elbow to elbow. You have to get all your bets in early or you get shut out. Lines are 100 deep before each race and there's always people complaining they didn't get their bet in.

I probably ran into you back then. My dad and I used to go every day.

I am sure we did. I remember the first time I was told I had to wear a collared shirt to get closer to the finish line.

Lots of good times. 90 min drive from Kingston NY.
I miss the SPA.:toast:
