first play, overnight:

2 units.....ball state (+8) over western kentucky
western playing good basketball over the last month, winning 6 in a row and 7 of their last 8. but ball state has put together a nice stretch as well, winning 5 of their last 7. before the season started, ball state had high expectations- but obviously losing smith for the season was a huge blow to them. and they really struggled to adjust to life without him around christmas time and into early january. but it seems like now ball state has become chris williams team- and he is playing out of his mind lately, with 3 28+ point games in his last 5- including 44 the other day against central michigan. even though winning this game wont make any difference to ball state's resume, i still think theyll use the rare national tv performance to their advantage. cards should keep it close.

2 units.....duke (-13.5) over nc state

i think i indirectly talked myself into a duke play after checking some numbers in response to kickservs thread. the numbers are convincingly in dukes favor. for starters, duke is coming off a string of non-covers, which makes them even more dangerous tomorrow. theyve failed to cover in 3 straight home games. how to cure that? bring in dukes personal whipping boy over the last 3 years- the nc state wolfpack. i gotta admit, i like the talent sendeck has in his program right now. and i think nc state is a good team. but they just dont fare well vs duke, and theyve taken some brutal a$$ whoopings at the hands of the devils lately. before their upset of the devils last month, duke won the last five meetings by margins of 30,37,19,15, and 26 points. clearly, sendeck is going to try and slow the tempo, but if duke hits nc state with the patented "13-0 run" early in the game, i just dont think the wolfpack have the offensive firepower to recover. duke is a dangerous team when playing with revenge, and the fact that theyre in off a handful of non-covers in cameron makes me believe the rout is on saturday afternoon

2 units.....depaul (-4.5) over st.louis

simply put- depaul needs this game. the demons are squarely on the bubble and they cant afford a slip-up vs an inferior team. st.louis has pulled two gigantic upsets in the last 2 weeks- vs louisville and then cincinnati. the bearcat win doesnt have as much luster as it normally would since cincy is down this year, but its still a big win for the slu program. their recent "slay the giants" type of play keeps the number workable here. depaul has been very solid at home this year- with the exception of the marquette game where they collapsed in the 2h. slu- youve had your share of upsets the L2 weeks. time for you to go back to being st.louis again and take a sound beating here.

1 unit....north carolina/maryland over 150

terps have had a weird schedule this week 3rd game in 5 days for them. i think that will reflect in their defense a little, and that should allow the scoring to get up there. the duke/terps game was kind of a grinder, but ideally the terps want to get out and run off their defense. in this first meeting, the game landed right on the total, but there were a couple stretches where the scoring just stopped. but these 2 teams seem to play uptempo acc-style basketball vs each other in the past. game should reach about 160 imo.

2 units....tulsa (+8) over gonzaga
1 unit......tulsa moneyline (+310) over gonzaga

to me, this is by far the best matchup of all the bracket buster games. two premier mid-majors, and both teams with some big time players. gonzaga is in off a loss, and thats not ideal, as i think that will re-focus gonzaga and have them ready for this one, but i dont think it should matter. i think tulsa can win this game. both teams get exceptional guard play, both teams shoot the 3 well, and both teams have good free throw shooters. theyre very similar in a lot of ways. i just think tulsa is finally hitting their stride. theyve been a disappointment this year, but theyve shown signs of living up to the preseason hype lately. its never easy to win in the kennel, and with zags are going to look to throw the knockout punch early, but another advantage for tulsa (as far as being able to play on the road) is that theyve got a handful of experienced seniors who have played in big games and hostile environments. id be surprised if tulsa allows any sustained runs for gonzaga.

hellah:

youre being too modest. ball state was right there the whole game. a well deserved cover. ive had my share of cheap covers and tough losses, but ball state played pretty well- at least well enough to hang the number

two late plays, sans writeups:

pepperdine (-8.5)
san francisco (-3)

two chalks, normally not my style- but i like these.

really a tough call:

gates? simply because his team is winning

kaman? hes come on extremely strong as of late

hunter and chris williams both are hurt by their teams lack of success this year. i think hunter is selfish- but his numbers are still impressive. but theyre not translating to wins- which reflects poorly on him
