I see tremendous value on the ice tonight and therefore have 5 plays in total.
1)Pittsburgh(+.5,+135)
Pittsburgh has actually played OK the last couple of weeks, going 2-2-1 the last 5 against opponents with a collective record 13 games over 500. They have scored 3 or more goals in 5 of their last 6 and have outshot their opponents in 6 of their last 9 games.
On the other hand, Montreal is just 3-3-4 in their last 10 against opponents with a collective record 35 games BELOW 500. They have scored a total of 4 goals in their last 3 games, and have scored 1 goal or less in 5 of their last 10. They also have given up a whopping 40 or more shots against in 5 of their last 9 games.
The Habs PP is MIA at 0-14 and 1-23 and they have given up at least 1 PP goal in 4/5. Pittsburgh has scored at least 1 PP goal in 8/10.
The Penguins are 19-16 when getting +.5 on the road and the Canadiens are 18-19 when giving -.5 at home.
2)New Jersey(+.5,-130)
I'll lay the extra vigerish here to win on the tie game as the Leafs have a recent string of home ties.
We have two teams heading in opposite directions here. Even with their loss last night, Jersey is HOT! They are 7-2 last 9, 13-7-2 last 19, have won their last 4 road games, and have outshot their last 6 straight opponents. Yes, they did play last night, but they are a not bad 9-6-2 ATS when playing B/B and star goalie Brodeur had the night off so will be rested for this one. The Devils are a cool 4-0-1 ATS the last 5 vs Toronto.
The Leafs are finally succumbing to an incredible injury list that now adds Lumme to a lengthy list that already included Cujo, Roberts, Renberg and Yushkevich. They are 2-3 the last 5 with 3 of those games against non-playoff position teams. They are just 4-3-2 the last 9 and have given up 4 or more goals in 4/6.
Brodeur vs Schwab. Hmmmmmm????? I'll put my money on Brodeur.
3)New York Islanders(Pk,+115)
Yes, I am aware of that 0-18-3 streak that the Islanders have against Washington and yes, it is quite incredible. But there are a ton of factors pointing to New York in this game for me, including a real triple whammy right off the bat.
1)This is the first game back home off an 8 game road trip for the Capitals which is poison.
2)They won the last 2 games of that road trip which makes for an even better statistical go-against tonight.
3)Then, let's add in the fact that they played last night on the road and now return home to face a rested opponent and the triple whammy is complete.
If you want more, then consider that Washington has been outshot in their last 4 games and have a TOTAL of just 58 shots for, in their last 3 games COMBINED!
The Islanders are a crisp 4-1 in their last 5, with the only loss coming in the deadly "post-Ranger" game (where they are something like 0-14-1 the last 3 years!)
Islanders score more goals (2.92 to 2.76) and give up less goals (2.77 to 3.01).
4)Florida(+.5,+100)
The Rangers have lost their last 3, and 7 of their last 8. They are 2-8 the last 10 when giving half a puck. Their PP is 1-15 and they have given up at least 1 PP goal in 7/10.
Florida has won their last 2 games, and have given up 3 goals or less in last 5 straight and 9/10.
Flaherty should be back in net for the Panthers and he has been outstanding with a save percentage of 94.5% in his 2 starts (both wins) while 18 year old Dan Blackburn takes his 8-14 W/L record to the nets for NY.
This is Pavel Bure's return to Florida, and I think that will help the emotion of the hometown Panthers more than the visiting Rangers.
5)Phoenix(+.5,-125)
Again, I will pay a little extra vigerish to win on a tie in a game I expect to be low scoring.
Colorado is 1-3 in their last 4 and just 3-4 in their last 7. They have scored a total of 4 goals in their last 4 games, and have scored 1 goal or fewer in 4/7. They have given up at least 1 PP goal in last 5, and have been outshot in 6/8.
On the other hand, the Coyotes have been the NHL's hottest team since the Olympic break, going 10-2-1-2 for 23 points. They are also 9-3-1 in their last 13 games.
They have given up more than 2 goals only twice in their last 15 games, and they have scored 3 or more goals in 4/5 and 9/12.
