east tennessee......both these teams could be considered the class of their respective conferences. etsu should be carrying a 7-gm win streak into this game. they folded vs clemson (must we revisit
) but outplayed the tigers and should have won. and these teams are actually pretty similar. both have solid upperclassmen, both shoot the ball well, and both hit the glass extremely hard. im just a sucker for etsu's balance. wadood has been a double-double machine and all of their starters can score. no real drop-off. this is more of a play on etsu than it is against iupui. was just real impressed with etsu toward the end of last season. made a mental note to keep an eye out for em early on this year, as they returned all their talent that took wake forest to the wire in the big dance. worth noting that a handful of iupui's guys are real bricklayers from the line. four of their top 6 guys shoot under 63% from the line. etsu not only shoots a better % from the line, but they get to the line more frequently. they dont settle for jumpers. they should get this game by 5-7 points.
butler.....big surprise. im backing butler again. call it what you want, but they are proficient in every category thats important to me. they shoot the 3 well, shoot FTs well, have solid guard play, and are used to playing power conference foes. if youre looking for an explanation on how they lost to uwgb at home- i dont have it. totally inexplicable. but it doesnt scare me away from backing em as a dog vs a decent but hardly great st.louis squad. slu has had some good showing (particularly the arizona game) but i always look at them as a much better dog than chalk. of huge importance in this game is the fact that slu cant exploit butlers biggest weakness -- rebounding. both teams are poor rebounding teams. but butler is getting a good chunk of points vs a pretty mediocre st.louis team. with butler off to a rocky start, theres value here. i sound like a broken record here, but butler is a live dog. ill always grab a team that shoots 75% from the line and is a winning program like butler. will win more than i lose backing teams in this kind of spot and thats all i can ask for.
depaul....playing the percentages here. i think this game has an inflated number. seton hall has covered 4 straight. depaul has failed to cover 4 straight. really dont think pirates are 10.5 points better than depaul. i think theyre about 6-8 points better. i like the way depaul competed at michigan state. i know the spartans are nothing special this year, but thats not an easy place to play. only thing that scares me is that demons are a poor FT shooting team. you gotta knock FTs down away from home if you want to hang in games. im not gonna knock seton hall. theyre a program on the rise and theyve played well this yr. but this is still unchartered territory for them in recent years. this is their 4th straight game where theyre laying a good amount of points. i think complacency sets in and theyre gonna find themselves in a dogfight. depaul doesnt do anything out of the ordinary, but they are a team with lots of experience and upperclassmen. really feel like seton hall has played over their head a little the L3 gms. they havent been challenged lately and i think they come out a little flat.
