Injury keeps Porter hungry



Some athletes might consider a knee injury that wipes out an entire season to be a curse.

Creighton guard Nick Porter sees it as a blessing in disguise.

"I'm not frustrated," Porter said. "Having to sit out this year has allowed me to see what they're trying to do here. It's given me a head start on school. I think I really needed this.

"I didn't need to get hurt, but it's helped me refocus. It's going to make me a whole lot hungrier than ever. I can't wait to be coached by these guys."



Porter will have to wait until next season to get that opportunity. Two knee surgeries have saddled the 6-foot-3 junior college transfer to the bench this season. He'll watch the Bluejays play their final regular-season home game Saturday against Indiana State at Qwest Center Omaha.

Creighton will take an 18-10 record into the 1:05 p.m. game. One can only speculate what the record might be had Porter been able to play this season.

Before the season, the Creighton coaching staff was excited about what Porter could bring to the Bluejays. At 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, Porter had the size to negate some of the matchup problems Creighton has experienced when facing teams with bigger, physical guards.

Creighton Coach Dana Altman compared Porter to former Bluejay star Ben Walker, a rugged rebounder and tenacious defender who stood 6-4. In addition to his size, Porter had displayed the ability to be a solid scorer in his two junior college seasons.

But he never got a chance to display those talents this season. Porter injured his knee two days before reporting to campus in August and underwent an arthroscopic procedure shortly after arriving in Omaha. During the operation, it was discovered that Porter had a small hole at the bottom of his thigh bone.

He underwent a second operation Jan. 27 in which a piece of bone from his thigh was used to plug the hole.

"The reason they didn't do it the first time was that they wanted to see if it would heal on its own," Porter said. "This time they plugged it. It's going to be the best thing for me in the long run, and it feels great."

Porter will remain on crutches for another two weeks. He then starts a rehabilitation program that he hopes will put him back on the court by June or July.

"They said I can be back jogging in six weeks," Porter said.

Porter had made repeated attempts to come back from the first surgery, and he was even allowed to dress for one of Creighton's games in late December.

"The day before this last surgery, I was dunking and doing everything that I could do before," Porter said. "But when I ran, it started getting irritated because the hole was still there. I can feel the difference already. It's tender but it's tender because it's healing."

Porter, who grew up in Las Vegas, started his collegiate career at the Community College of Southern Nevada.

After Porter's freshman season, the school shut down its basketball program because of lack of funds and he transferred to Compton (Calif.) Community College. He averaged 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists while helping the Tartars to the California Community Colleges tournament championship. Porter averaged 18.8 points per game in Compton's five tourney wins.

Being forced to watch Creighton struggle at times this season has been difficult for Porter.

"It hurts me to lose," Porter said. "I'm a competitive guy, and I want to win. When we lose, it eats at me. It hurts me to lose as much as it hurts Coach Altman. I can't sleep after we lose, and I'm not out on the court.

"The reason I came here was to win. I want to keep our fans happy."

Porter is confident he'll be able to do his part to put smiles on the faces of Creighton fans next season.

"I'm confident I'll be back," Porter said. "The trainers, the doctors feel the same way. Everything looks good on the X-rays. I'm planning on being back here this summer, working hard and getting ready for next year."
