Saturday's best NHL bets

Chicago Blackhawks at Vancouver Canucks (-105, 5.5)

The Canucks are reaching into the magic time machine to see if a wily veteran can provide some aid for the team?s recent defensive struggles.

With defenseman Sami Salo going down with a groin injury Thursday, Vancouver called up Nolan Baumgartner from the Manitoba Moose of the AHL.

The 33-year-old Baumgarter has appeared in 131 NHL games between the Capitals, Blackhawks, Penguins, Canucks and Stars but hasn?t played in the league since the 2006-07 campaign.

The Canucks defensive line is already depleted with Kevin Bieksa (foot) and Willie Mitchell (upper body) on the bench with injuries.

?A lot of good defensemen are on the sidelines and they're obviously tough to replace,? Christian Ehrhoff said. ?I feel good playing a lot more minutes ? it's a good challenge.?

More minutes for fewer quality players equates to tired legs. Vancouver has given up no less than two goals in the team?s last six games and is surrendering an average of 3.0 gpg during that span.

Pick: Over

Phoenix Coyotes at Washington Capitals (-210, 6)

The Coyotes are on the brink of an ownership change, but that doesn?t seem to be affecting the players.

Phoenix has won three of its last four games and seems to be playing with a chip on its shoulders with fans anticipating the organization?s financial problems to cause a late-season collapse.

"Everyone expected us to be giving away games," said forward Vernon Fiddler.

"We're pretty grounded here," Shane Doan told ESPN.com. "The one thing I've learned is to be patient and wait and see what happens."

What?s happening now is that the Coyotes are playing well consistently (only one three-game losing streak all season) and occupy the No. 4 spot in the Western Conference standings.

The Caps and Coyotes have not played this season, but Phoenix has taken four of the last five in the series including two straight.

As hot as Washington is right now, the hefty moneyline Phoenix has been given here is too much to pass up.

Pick: Coyotes

Hockey Night In Canada

Hockey Night In Canada

Hockey Night In Canada

Toronto Maple Leafs at Florida Panthers (-140, 6)

The basics

The Toronto Maple Leafs have a record of 17-25-10, 14th in the Eastern Conference and are 2-6-1 in their last nine games.

?I?m very disappointed. It?s very frustrating, because this team in November proved it could play with everybody. We?ve lost our way and we have to get back on track,? Toronto General Manager Brian Burke told reporters.

The Florida Panthers are 21-21-9, 12th in the Eastern Conference with 51 points. They are 4-1-2 in their last seven games.

End of the road

Toronto is playing its final game of a five-game road trip and this will be its fourth game in six nights. At 8-15-5, the Maple Leafs have the second-worst road record in the Eastern Conference.

Florida has been unspectacular at home this season (9-8-6), but is 3-0-1 in its last four games at the BankAtlantic Center.

The home team has won three of the last four contests between Toronto and Florida.

Closing the close games

Toronto goaltender Jonas Gustavsson is 0-8 in overtime/shootouts this season.

"I haven't had a chance to win yet in OT, and that's kind of frustrating," said Gustavsson after Toronto?s most recent loss.

Four of the last nine meetings between Toronto and Florida have gone to overtime.

Toronto is 1-10 this season in extra time and the Panthers are 6-9.

Toothless cats?

The Florida Panthers have scored just two goals in their last three games, going under in each of those contests. They have allowed only four goals those games.

On top of that, leading scorer Nathan Horton left Thursday's game with a leg injury. His status is unknown for Saturday.

Steve Gorten of the South Florida Sun Sentinel points out that Panthers goaltender Tomas Vokoun has two shutouts and a .962 save percentage in January.

"He's been outstanding all year, but he's been very, very good lately," Coach Pete DeBoer told the the Sun Sentinel.

The Maple Leafs have gone over the total in three of their last four and the over is 5-2-1 in the last eight meetings between Toronto and Florida.

Chicago Blackhawks at Vancouver Canucks (-105, 5.5)

The basics

The late HNIC matchup features two of the West?s best.

The Chicago Blackhawks are second in the Western Conference with 74 points and a 35-12-4 record. The Blackhawks have won three of four and are on a 17-5-1 stretch.

The Vancouver Canucks are fifth in the West with a 30-18-2 record. The Canucks have won their last three games and are 14-4-2 in their last 20.

D-pleted

The Vancouver Canucks lost Sami Salo to a groin injury in their last game and will play Saturday?s game without Salo, Willie Mitchell, and Kevin Bieksa.

"Every year," centre Ryan Kesler told the Vancouver Sun. "Hopefully, we get a couple back pretty soon. Hopefully, Sami isn't too bad, but we have to keep pressing here.?

Vancouver will have to focus on preventing the Blackhawks from cashing in with the extra man. The Blackhawks have the third-best road power-play in the NHL at 27.2 percent.

The road is long

Saturday?s game will be Chicago?s fifth stop of a season-long eight game road-trip. They are 3-1-0, scoring 15 goals during the trip.

Vancouver is playing the second game of a critical four-game homestand. The Canucks head out on the road January 30 and will not play their next home game until March 13 - a fourteen-game span.

Net news

Chicago has two goaltenders playing very well.

Antti Niemi is 13-3-1 with a 1.85 goals against average and four shutouts. Cristobal Huet is 22-9-3 with a 2.24 goals against average and four shutouts. It looks like Niemi will get the call on Saturday.

"We liked what we saw today," Quenneville said after Thursday?s win in Calgary. "He's (Niemi is) playing well. It's tough to take that away."

Chicago has gone under the total in four of its last six games, while the over is 3-1 in Vancouver?s last four.
