NEW YORK -- Longtime broadcaster and author Dick Schaap died Friday (always someone just before Christmas) from postoperative complications following hip replacement surgery. He was 67.
Besides his eliquent voice, oustanding insight and general class, I will always remember Dick Schapp as editor of Sport Magazine from 1973-77. At a time when I was in my prime (you know 11-12 yrs old in Little League), Sport Magazine in the day was an outstanding Sports magazine that blew the doors off Sports Illustrated (except maybe the photos). I recall his great analysis on ALI-Frazier (before the fight) of why Frazier would outlast Ali. He did this with his reliable true conviction yet was a great friend of Ali.
His style and character will be sorely missed.
