As if a 6-18 record and Valentine's Day date with CAA leader VCU weren't enough, the illness going around the area has hit the UNCW basketball team of late.

Dejan Grkovic missed practice on Monday due to an upper respiratory illness and Darryl Felder is in bed today with the flu. Their status for Wednesday's game is unknown.

Also, according to Joe Browning's game notes, the Seahawks are 7-7 all-time on Valentine's Day and won their most recent Feb. 14 game - beating Drexel 69-66 in 2005.

Who'll guard their guards?

Seahawks face a defensive shortfall in the backcourt

UNC-Wilmington has shown plenty of affection to opponents' backcourts this season. The Seahawks have allowed 15 different guards to score 20 points or more in a game.

Nathan Mann of William & Mary torched the Seahawks for 25 points Saturday night and just three days earlier, Delaware's Sam McMahon scored 26 points to lead the Blue Hens to victory. Both players set career highs.

The Seahawks are tired of making backcourts feel warm and fuzzy. They hope to avoid another lovefest tonight against Virginia Commonwealth's high-scoring guard trio.

Jesse Pellot-Rosa, B.A. Walker and Eric Maynor combined for 57 points in VCU's 74-65 victory over UNCW on Jan. 17.

The Seahawks don't have one defensive stopper on the perimeter, so Moss is searching for a way to slow down the CAA's top-scoring offense.

The Seahawks lead the league in 3-point field goal percentage defense. They've found success using a 2-3 zone at times this season, but that's a risky proposition against the Rams, the Colonial Athletic Association's top 3-point shooting team.

Rams guard Jamal Shuler, a former Jacksonville prep standout, is shooting 49.3 percent (33 of 67) behind the arc in league games - and he comes off the bench.

"We've been able to contain dribble penetration some when we haven't had to sell out with over help," Moss said. "Then you get into no-man's land. Guys make open 3-pointers, and if you don't help, they will get to the rim."

By the numbers, it's the worst defensive team at UNCW since 1993-94. Opponents are shooting 44 percent and scoring 71 points a game.
