Trying out different Casinos for Hold-em tournaments $50-$100

Found this reference site...http://www.allvegaspoker.com/tournaments.php

In years past I have played exclusively at Orleans....very good $70.00 tourney, lots of good local players. Unfortunately pretty smokey.....times I have been there, 7-11 tables...
Munchies VERY accessible, cheap burgers, pizza, subway steps away.

Yesterday went to Treasure Island.

Poker room a little tuff to find, not much signage.....back by shops and theater.
wandered past a cool carved Mastodon Tusk near a
cashiers station, it was completely carved into Japanese Samurais, Warriors, and Battle scenes..must
have been 15 foot long.

Lots of 30 some year-old fresh tourists wandering around with the look of
"gonna win a fortune" in their eyes.

Nice poker room, smoke free, $50 buy-in, 2pm start.

We had about 26 entries, 2 locals at my table had played in WSOP, along with
a farmer from Southern Ohio, a female school teacher from San Diego, and a bunch of "clams" people who did not say "boo" to anyone.

One of the WSOP locals was "The Toyman" he was a huge Jet fan and his "schtick" was he had a suitcase full of toys with him.

Throughout the tourney he kept bringing out toys and props and interacting with them.

He walked up to the table and had a small applause device with him that he played.
He started out with a "magic 8 ball" asking what to do.
Then he finally got a good hand and he put on a Gold Genie Hat, he lost the hand, pulled out a small telephone and called asking the operator for Aces...however his wife recording came on.

He progressed to a Godzilla toy, no luck, a crocodile head, no luck, then finally got another good hand, pushed it all in and put on a "Woody Woodpecker Head" he produced " woody woodpecker noises...and lost on a suck out.

He left the table to the sound of applause and cheers from one of his devices.....actually hated to see him go; name is Dave.

He loves the Treasure Island, only plays there he said.....the poker room likes him, but limits him to one toy or prop on the table at a time, someone pitched a fit at some time.

I finished 12th, no cards, very little luck when it counted, best hand was pocket JJ took down a good pot..that sustained me.

Will go back, the 7pm tourney is their biggest daily.

Old Vegas story....

Old Vegas story....

In my neighborhood is a crusty old lady named "Ann".

She has played poker here for 40 years...

She talked of Benny Binion randomly pitching rolls of quarters into slot players trays...saying "Win Something"

She was an avid hold-em tourney player till two years ago, her back hurts too much...she is probably mid 70's.

She claims way back that the hold-em tournament tables seated 19 players.....

She knocked Helmuth out of a $4000 satellite tournament some years back. Helmuth shoved the pot at the "little old lady", spun his chair around 3 times, and left.

She said "I would have spanked him"

Quite an interesting lady, we both agreed The Mafia needs to come back and start running Vegas again.

I am auditioning....

Happy New Years.....they are closing down the strip for a major party; and charging $30 to enjoy the "Free-mont" experience....many clubs are $50 admission for women, $100 for men....hotels are outrageous...expecting 314,000 visitors.

Me? I got a bottle of wine, 2 glasses, gonna pack the wife and Lab up and park on a hill and watch the Massive Fireworks show.....54,000 rockets off of 8 strip casino rooftops.

Should be a blast....:142smilie

more sportsbook/poker-room reviews...

more sportsbook/poker-room reviews...

Santa Fe Station, Northwestern area...

Sportsbook packed for football bowls and Dallas Cowboy-Giants game, they brought out extra chairs, even then, it was not terribly smokey...one very drunk annoying screaming Giant fan, even screamed when they missed a field goal.

Several really big screens, many smaller plasmas and individual booths.
Spacious poker room....not smokey at all, even though it is in the middle of a very smokey slot area.
There was about 5 tables of hold-em going.

Overall, better than Texas or Fiesta.

Red Rock Casino Resort, Golf Course on West Charleston....WOW, this is a beautiful property, fountains, flames, waterfalls.

REALLY a very nice sportsbook, poker-room adjacent.

This evening, they had an incredible 15 tables of hold-em action..NL. Limit, 1-2, 3-5, 4-8.

Lots of very good local action with a nicer class of players.....a very good experience...(some of the scuzzier casinos I kept a hand on my wallet, and kept an eye out in dark parking lots.)

Very nice restaurants, saki bar?, micro brewery?

This is probably where I will end up spending most of my Card Playing.

The strip is just too much bother to travel to.

I have not seen much Omaha action, there is a tourney, Thur 7pm at Orleans I plan on trying.

Southpoint casino

Southpoint casino

Way on the extreme south end miles past Mandalay Bay on Las vegas Blvd.

South, past this huge monstrosity is tumbleweeds and mountains...

Looks to me they built this casino expecting strip to eventually build to meet them.....simply not going to happen.
The sportsbook was small and lifeless, small near vacant poker room, ...vast spacious casino...probably caters more to Henderson area.

Did find a decent "Dim Sum" restaurant near Eastern and I 215,
"Oceans"

Dim Sum lunch is a Chinese Traditional lunch consisting of waitresses pushing carts of plated food items around and as you choose, they punch your ticket and it is tabulated at the end of the meal.
Kind of a Chinese buffet brought to you.....killer Su Mei and Shrimp Dumplings.

I scratched Southpoint off my list.

DM, thanks for the info on the TI poker room. i'll be at the TI in 10 days, and that 2pm tourney sounds enticing.

This may help you Smitty...

Best overall tourneys for me seem to be Orleans and Red Rock..I have decided to stay away from the madness known as the strip.

Orleans has daily 7pm except Thurs (omaha)....usually 7-11 tables $75.00 entry.....also lots of local action limit, no limit hold-em Omaha.

Red Rock daily 6:30 pm 3-4 tables $50. register before 6 get extra 1000 in chips. Lots of live action 15+ tables hold-em some Omaha.
Red Rock is near Summerlin ( a good 30 min from strip) an upscale community...

Treasure island has tourneys 10am-7pm.....2pm and 7pm most tables, 3-5...

Having transportation gives great options. Good luck..

thanks, DM. i just spent way too much time reading up on a couple of the rooms. that's a great website.

we're not getting a car, so most of my gambling will probably be at the TI or the mirage.

i don't blame you. if i lived there, i'm sure i'd avoid the strip, too. but since i'm only there for 5 days at a time, i'm looking forward to the madness. :)

my GF was so excited when i told her there are 4 daily tournaments at the TI.
