A struggling discount retailer is shedding stores in a bid to boost its financial position.

Sears (SHLD -5.52%) has sold off almost a dozen stores over the past year and a half. The stores, which are among the retailer's most profitable outlets, are scattered across the U.S. and Canada. There are 2,000 Sears and Kmart stores in the U.S. The company also operates 148 Sears locations in Canada, The Wall Street Journal notes.

Property developers say it is unusual for retailers to sell high-performing stores, instead of renovating them.

A representative of Sears told The Journal that the store sales generated enough revenue to compensate for the loss of operating income. The spokesperson also noted that the company has shuttered 300 Sears and Kmart locations since 2010, with just 2% of those performing at or above expectations.<!--EndofExcerptMarker-->

Falling store revenue has hit Sears hard in recent years. The company has lost more than $4 billion dollars in just two years, prompting the retailer to look to asset sales to raise $500 million in needed cash. Sears has raised $277 million from selling stores and leases through the second quarter of this year.

Once the leader in appliance sales, Sears has lost significant ground to rivals including Home Depot (HD -0.17%) and Lowes (LOW +0.15%).

Shares of Sears fell more than 1% in Wednesday morning trading.

Sears had a chance to survive when they merged w/KMart..

they could have taken these sadsack KMart ..brought in savy regional and local managers to give WalMart a run at us payless forever customers of WalMart..

Instead they put the Craftsman and high end stuff in Kmart and the shyt is still sitting on the sheves in both Sears and KMart..

compete or die..

those of us who shop WalMart and Craigslist could not care less about the perception of brand name..

and we make 3/4 of the face of the earth..

again..

compete or die..

Hate to see Sears go down, I bought my last 2 appliances at Sears because I'm generally greeted & taken care of by someone who has knowledge of the products . I've gone to Best Buy & was greeted by a sloppy looking kid who could only tell me what the differences between 2 washers was the price. Anything beyond that he had to go get help. Told him don't bother & we walked out. Hope both companies survive.

certainly appreciate your point..

but neither will survive..

comparison shopping is now an internet option that big box stores know the thrifty consumer will do on his own..

Give me Costco..Sam's Club and WalMart..

and 30 lawns a week to cut..

and I can live forever.

oh

and of course.....

Hear what you're saying. I don't buy anything from Best Buy. Hate the place.
