James Baldwin has been pushed back in the rotation in order to keep Joel Pineiro and Freddy Garcia in a regular five-day cycle. Baldwin's ERA of 5.01 is more than a point higher than the rest of the starters. His regular turn would have been tomorrow, but he's been pushed to Thursday with Pineiro and Garcia taking tomorrow and Wednesday, respectively. ...

Expos Pitching Plans....

Expos Pitching Plans....

It appears right-hander Carl Pavano is out of the rotation, at least for now, after he couldn't get an out in the fourth inning Saturday night. Zach Day, who earned his first major-league win in his first major-league appearance Saturday night in relief of Pavano, is the likely candidate to start Thursday night against the Kansas City Royals. There are four options with Pavano, manager Frank Robinson said. They can put him in the bullpen - although Robinson is reluctant to use him in short relief because of his history of elbow trouble. They can sit him down, send him to the minors, or trade him, an option they are apparently pursuing. Sitting him is probably not an option; the club already has right-hander Masato Yoshii, hit on the jaw by a Randall Simon shot up the middle in Detroit, at less than 100 per cent and unavailable for the series against the Blue Jays. Yoshii could return to action for the series against the Royals.

Twins Pitching Note.....

Twins Pitching Note.....

-- Rick Reed just can't get a break.

The Twins righthander will miss his scheduled start Wednesday against the New York Mets -- his former team -- after cutting his right thumb on a suitcase Saturday.

"I almost thought that I needed stitches," said Reed, who was acquired from the Mets for outfielder Matt Lawton last July 30.

Although Reed said he could start Wednesday, the Twins will go with righthander Matt Kinney (2-5, 4.71 ERA).

The Twins plan on having Reed (6-3, 4.90 ERA) make his next start Saturday in Philadelphia. "I would rather not take a chance, pitch him and it gets worse," said manager Ron Gardenhire, whose team is off today and will open a three-game series at Shea Stadium on Tuesday. "He would be tough to replace."

This will be the third time this season Reed has either missed a start or left one because of injury. Reed has battled a sore right forearm and a sore neck that required a cortisone shot last month.
