NEW YORK (AFP) - Senior US war planners have accused Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld of "micromanaging" operations in Iraq (news - web sites) and ignoring recommendations from military officials.

"He thought he knew better. He was the decision-maker at every turn," one senior planner told the New Yorker magazine, in its edition to be released Monday.

Planners with the Joint Chiefs of Staff had recommended deploying four or more Army divisions, which Rumsfeld rejected, the report said.

Their plan also called for shipping by sea hundreds of tanks and other heavy vehicles -- enough for three or four divisions -- in advance, but Rumsfeld chose to rely on equipment already in Kuwait, which was enough for one division, the report said.

After Turkey's parliament shocked war planners by refusing to allow tens of thousands of US troops to enter Iraq from Turkish soil, General Tommy Franks, head of US Central Command, had argued for delaying the war until those forces could enter from another route, it said.

But a former intelligence official said Rumsfeld "overruled him."

"This is tragic. American lives are being lost," one senior planner told the magazine.

Another former intelligence official accused Syria and Turkey of working together "to screw us in the north -- to cause us problems... Syria and the Iranians agreed that they could not let an American occupation of Iraq stand."

If there's one guy in the whole scheme of things that I dont care much for.....It's Rumsfeld. I know I dont know him personally, but from wathching him on television roughly 50 times.....I just dont know if I'm too sure about him.

Buck:
I'm not targeting you at all. If there is one thing I can't stand, it's people saying, "I told you so" or "we should've....." in the middle of a project, any project, just when things get a little tough. Swallow your F-ing pride and ego and support the decisions that were made. When all is said and done, then air your grievances. Reporting on this story at this time does nothing but undermine the nations's belief in the adminstration and undermines the war effort. Everyone on the Bush staff will be under a microscope once this conflict is over. Let it wait until then. Support the decisions that have been made.

Thanks for being respectful. Othewise, I'm sure I would have taken that response personally. I understand completely what youre saying. I have always had, and continue to have complete faith in what we are doing. I know it's not a good time for someone (I'm assuming you knew I didnt write that, but did post it) to report that story. I merely was making an assertion that I'm not completely in favor of the way I see the guy carry himself.

I'm sorry, I posted the same article, don't know how I missed yours. The reason why I posted it is for the posters on all sides of the issue can read it. It does'nt mean that the article is correct.

I tend to think the war is going well.I think they advanced too quickly & they are letting the supply lines catch up. It also gives the so;diers a chance to catch their breath. I heard that there was a long pause(maybe 30 days)at the Battle of the Bulge. It is also giving the allies a chance to soften them up, by continuing air raids over baghdad.

No problemo AR

I understand the point he was trying to make. Actually agree with him when it comes to the press. Just watching a White House Press Briefing can make ya want to put a hurtin on a few of em.

At the same time, if we want to have a friendly hypothetical discussion over what we think could have been done differently or faster or slower or whatever.....than there's IMO nothing wrong with that. I dont think that's where SSD was going with it. Anybody that has read any of my posts knows where I stand with my government and the men and women who are willing to give their lives for us.

i agree....of course we are going to make mistakes....and you have to be able to be flexible...

original thought was lightning march to Baghdad....appears that might not be best way to conduct things...so we change up plans....better than having another massacre.....

by the way....anyone hear about the Columbian professor who hopes that we experience 1000 Mogadishu's????

unreal....we should kick the guy out of the country for that...

We should have listen to a few more of the 4 stars. I said that long time ago. I said learn from other mistakes and listen to the 4 stars. Lets not make Nam like mistakes. Do not underestmate goning all the way to Baghdad and what it means. I don't like those Office workers planing anymore wars. I dont want anymore hand tieing and BS leaked to the press. And don't give out these cute little names that makes you look like dumb asses. What was Shock and Ah or somethng like it. Call it what it is. The battle for Iraqis freedom. Everytime we try to play to the world media we look like chit. Need some leader ship to step it up a few clicks here. Mistakes are not excepted. They cause to many deaths that are not needed.

i basically agree

i basically agree

with you guys.....although i have also read articles about rumsfeld`s racalcitrance,i hope we aren`t seeing a" sacrificial lamb" mentality taking hold in the administration.....floating some trial balloons out there to set somebody up as the scapegoat in case things go badly....that would be reprehensible,in my opinion....

Reminds me of the post game prognosticators in Sports:lol:

Tough to project happenings in war but being able to adjust is what is important. My 2 cents, which is worth no more than rest of monday quaterbacks, is Turkey threw wrench in and maybe supply lines were strung out too thin, but I think they are adjusting with minimum casualties. I think main culprit is all projections from different sources predicted short war, which were also my sentiments, stock market had huge gains initial week but have subsided. I hope they do not feel pressured to resolve this too quickly. I would like to see them surround Baghdad and sit back for a week or 2 and clean up smaller towns while pummelting the guard and Baghdad with airpower till they say Uncle--make that Uncle Sam:D
