BEGINNING FRIDAY MAY 13
San Francisco at Chicago Cubs (3) 13th, 14th, 15th
The Giants haven?t hit their stride yet, but they continue to enjoy solid pitching (3.28 team ERA, 4th best in the NL)) and they should dispatch this mediocre Chicago team without difficulty. They posted a 5-2 mark in head to head play last season (+$185) and the Cubs are not faring well vs. righties (9-15, -$735 with only 3.4 runs per game). Matt Cain is expected to miss this series, but staff ace Tim Lincecum (2.47 ERA) will take a turn. Good value here at Wrigley, where the Cubs have lost money in 2011 (-$545). BEST BET: Lincecum.
Florida at Washington (3) 13th, 14th, 15th
The Nationals gave the Marlins a huge headache at Dolphin Stadium last weekend, taking 2 of 3 for a fat profit (+$160). Florida then hosted top division rival Philadelphia, so they may be in for a letdown here at Washington. The home team is hovering around the .500 mark, with a nice profit vs. righthanders (+$485). Their team ERA is nearly identical with Florida?s (3.54 ERA vs. 3.51 for the Marlins) and their lefties should do well (Marlins -$210 vs. southpaws with only 3.7 runs per game). Stick with the home team in this one. BEST BET: Nationals vs. righthanders/Lefthanders vs. the Marlins.
St. Louis at Cincinnati (3) 13th, 14th, 15th
The Cardinals have re-emerged as a strong contender in the NL Central, thanks to the top offense in the NL (.285 team BA), coupled with better than expected work on the mound (3.41 team ERA). The Reds have one of the weakest pitching staffs in the league right now (4.48 ERA), and their numbers vs. righthanders in night games are lousy (-$695). St. Louis checks in with a solid 10-6 road record (+$480), and they?ve already taken 2 of 3 rom this team in 2011. BEST BET: Cardinals vs. righthanders in night games.
Philadelphia at Atlanta (3) 13th, 14th, 15th
The Phillies are still on top in the NL East, but the Braves are keeping it close (7-3, +$405 last 10 days with a 2.30 ERA among starters), so we?re looking at another intriguing face-off. The bad news for Atlanta is that Philadelphia has yet to lose a day game in 2011 (10-0, +$1005) and two of these contests are scheduled to take place in the afternoon. Atlanta has lost money in day games at Turner Field in 2011 (-$260). so the visitor is going to be hard to pass up. BEST BET: Phillies in day games.
N.Y. Mets at Houston (3) 13th, 14th, 15th
The Mets have taken advantage of some weak opposition to at least move closer to .500 and they?ll be looking to get back at this Houston team that took 2 of 3 when they visited CitiField (+$170). The Astros are only 7-16 vs. righthanders in 2011 (-$690) while New York checks in with a 7-3 mark vs. southpaws (+$500 with 4.8 runs per game). We?ll look for a spot where we can use the visitor. BEST BET: Righthanders when opposed by Houston lefthanders.
Pittsburgh at Milwaukee (3) 13th, 14th, 15th
The Brewers took a pair from the Pirates in an earlier meeting (+$200), but they?ve been in an horrendous tailspin (2-8, -$620 last 10 days, averaging just 1.7 runs per game in those contests with a 4.34 ERA among starters). Pittsburgh is pitching well (3.69 team ERA) and they?ve been a big money-maker outside of PNC Park (+$945), after winning just 17 road games last year. Good underdog prices should be available. BEST BET: Pirates in all games.
San Diego at Colorado (3) 13th, 14th, 15th
The Rockies still lead in the NL West, but they are not running away with the division the way it appeared they might in April (2-7, -$745 last 10 days), and the offense is sputtering (2.7 runs per game in their last 10). We?d like to use the Padres as road underdogs here at Petco Park, given how well they?ve pitched (2.97 team ERA, 2nd best in the league). But the offense is a disaster (.216 team BA), so we?ll back off for the time being. BEST BET: None.
Arizona at L.A. Dodgers (3) 13th, 14th, 15th
This series was dominated by the Dodgers in 2010 (13-5, +$715), but the team is struggling at the moment (3-6, -$435 last 10 days) and they?ve been horrible against righthanded competition (only 10-16, -$780 with 3.4 runs per game). Daniel Hudson has flashed the form we caught glimpses of in 2010 in his recent appearances (1.93 ERA last two) and should be an excellent underdog value when he takes his turn at Chavez Ravine. BEST BET: D. Hudson.
Seattle at Cleveland (3) 13th, 14th, 15th
The Tribe swept a three game set at Safeco in April (+$350) and they continue to excel as mid May approaches (7-3 +$535 last 10 days). Their statistics wildly exceed anything we would have predicted (.265 team BA, 3.24 BA) and it?s hard to see Seattle?s anemic offense (.229 BA, dead last in the AL, with 3.7 runs per game) doing much damage at Progressive Field. They?ll be lucky to salvage a single win vs. Cleveland once again. BEST BET: Indians in all games.
Kansas City at Detroit (3) 13th, 14th, 15th
The Tigers have been running hot and cold, and they did drop 2 of 3 to the lightly regarded Royals during one of those dry spells (-$220). KC has been able to score some runs, but their pitching is unlikely to hold up (4.52 ERA among starters in the last 10 days), so we?re inclined to stick with the home team. Detroit is 9-4 vs. lefthanders this year (+$425) and they?ll see at least one of the visitors southpaws at Comerica this weekend. BEST BET: Tigers vs. lefthanders.
Boston at N.Y. Yankees (3) 13th, 14th, 15th
The Red Sox took 2 of 3 at Fenway after opening the season at 0-6, but they still have yet to hit their stride (-$1105 overall) and their pitching ranks near the bottom of the AL Pack (4.34 ERA). The Yanks are off to another strong start in their home park, particularly vs. righties (9-3, +$425), and Boston is only 6-9 (-$595) away from Fenway. Hard to lay off the Bombers, as they look to deal a blow to Boston?s playoff hopes. BEST BET: Yankees vs. righthanders.
Baltimore at Tampa Bay (3) 13th, 14th, 15th
These teams meet for their third series in 2010, the most recent being a three game sweep by the Rays at Camden Yards. The Rays have made a remarkable move in the AL East following that disastrous 1-8 start (now 20-14, +$425 overall) and their pitching has been first rate (3.24 ERA). But prices on the home team have become increasingly prohibitive and we are not inclined to back them at this time. BEST BET: None.
L.A. Angels at Texas (3) 13th, 14th, 15th
The Angels took 2 of 3 from the slumping Rangers in an earlier series (+$175) and they?ve taken command in the AL West (6-4, +$315 last 10 days). They own the best team BA in the league (.271) and rank second in team ERA (3.12). Texas continues to lose ground (3-8, -$550 last 10 days) so we?ll take a shot when LA takes on their righthanders, given the Angels 9-3 (+$850) record vs. righties on the road. BEST BET: Angels vs. righthanders.
Toronto at Minnesota (3) 13th, 14th, 15th
The Blue Jays are coming off a tough stretch of games, but they?re still in better shape than the Twins, who check in with a dreadful 12-20 mark (-$700). Toronto has excelled in night games this year (12-6, +$805) so we?ll take a shot in Friday night?s opener. They?ve been awful in day games (-$1055) but we?re not comfortable with Minnesota right now. BEST BET: Blue Jays in night games.
Chicago W. Sox at Oakland (3) 13th, 14th, 15th
The Athletics may not be an offensive powerhouse, but their young pitching staff continues to perform admirably (2.73 team BA, best in the majors) and they should dispatch the pitiful White Sox without difficulty. Chicago has the worst record in baseball at the moment (13-22, -$1200) and they?ve already dropped 2 out of 3 to this team in head to head competition. BEST BET: Athletics in all games.
BEGINNING MONDAY MAY 16
Pittsburgh at Washington (2) 16th, 17th
Paul Maholm has pitched reasonably well (3.68 ERA in seven starts) even though the Bucs are just 1-6 in his outings. Washington averages just 2.3 runs per game vs. lefties. PREFERRED: Maholm
Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati (2) 16th, 17th
The Reds are going with an exclusively righthanded rotation, and that?s bad news for a Chicago team that is only 9-14 vs. righhanders (-$735 with 3.4 runs per game). PREFERRED: Reds in both games.
Houston at Atlanta (2) 16th, 17th
The Braves are a hot team (7-3, +$405 last 10 days), and they own the best team ERA in the league (2.85). They should easily dispatch pitching poor Houston (4.97). PREFERRED: Braves in both games.
Florida at N.Y. Mets (2) 16th, 17th
The Marlins are 16-8 vs. righthanders (+$890 with 5.0 runs per game) and no one in the Mets rotation gives us much cause for concern (4.10 team ERA). PREFERRED: Marlins vs. righthanders.
Philadelphia at St. Louis (2) 16th, 17th
The Phillies are living up to very high expectations, and they?ve looked sharp outside of Citizens Bank (+$415). The Cards have lost money at home (-$395). PREFERRED: Phillies in both games.
San Francisco at Colorado (2) 16th, 17th
The Rockies are slumping (2-7, -$745 last 10 days, with 2.7 runs per game), and that SF pitching staff looks solid as ever (3.28). The visitor should get at least a split. PREFERRED: Giants in both games.
San Diego at Arizona (2) 16th, 17th
The Padres have had a disastrous start to the season when they play at night (-$890) and the Diamondbacks are a decent team here at Chase Field. PREFERRED: Diamondbacks in both games.
Milwaukee at L.A. Dodgers (2) 16th, 17th
The Brewers are off to a terrible start (-$760) but with so much quality in the rotation things should improve. LA can?t match up in the long run, but we?ll stay away for the time being. PREFERRED: None.
N.Y. Yankees at Tampa Bay (2) 16th, 17th
The Rays have climbed into a dead heat with the Yankees (8-3, +$395 last 10 days), but they?ve lost money at Tropicana Field in 2011 (-$470) and New York looks very tough. PREFERRED: None.
Toronto at Detroit (2) 16th, 17th
The Blue Jays are 9-5 vs. righties in night games (+$540) while the Tigers are only 8-14 vs. righthanders overall (-$680). Play this series accordingly. PREFERRED: Blue Jays when righty meets righty.
Baltimore at Boston (2) 16th, 17th
The O?s took 2 of 3 from Boston earlier this year (+$140) and the Red Sox are 3-7 in night games at Fenway (-$895). We?ll make a nice profit if Baltimore can split. PREFERRED: Orioles in both games.
Cleveland at Kansas City (2) 16th, 17th
The Indians are the biggest money-maker in baseball (+$1455) and they?ve already taken 5 of 7 from the Royals (+$285). But KC is 15-8 in this ballpark so proceed with caution. PREFERRED: None.
Texas at Chicago W. Sox (2) 16th, 17th
The Rangers have fallen off considerable in May (3-8, -$550 last 10), but the White Sox do not warrant consideration at this time (-$1200 overall). PREFERRED: None.
L.A. Angels at Oakland (2) 16th, 17th
The Angels are a money-maker away from Anaheim (9-3, +$850 vs. righties on the road) and the A?s are still in the red here at McAfee Coliseum (-$310). PREFERRED: Angels vs. righthanders.
Minnesota at Seattle (2) 16th, 17th
The Mariners have a trio of righthanders who should easily dispatch the hapless Twins. PREFERRED: F. Hernandez/Pineda/Fister.
BEGINNING WEDNESDAY MAY 18
Colorado at Philadelphia (2) 18th, 19th
Jorge De La Rosa is likely to pitch at Citizens Bank, and that?s good news for the Phillies despite his stellar 3.14 ERA. Philadelphia is 9-1 (+$700) vs. southpaws. PREFERRED: Phillies vs. De La Rosa.
Chicago Cubs at Florida (2) 18th, 19th
The Marlins are profitable vs. righties (+$890), while the Cubs have fared poorly in that situation (-$735, with only 3.4 runs per game). PREFERRED: Marlins when righty meets righty.
Pittsburgh at Cincinnati (2) 18th, 19th
The Reds have already dropped 3 of 4 to the Pirates (-$425) and Cincinnati has been a losing proposition at Great American Ballpark (-$390). PREFERRED: Pirates in both games.
Washington at N.Y. Mets (2) 18th, 19th
The Mets are 7-3 vs. lefthanders this year (+$500) and should dispatch the Washington lefthanders without much difficulty. PREFERRED: Mets vs. lefthanders.
Houston at St. Louis (2) 18th, 19th
The Cardinals are clearly the superior squad, but they were only 5-10 vs. the Astros in 2010 (-$1325) and they?ve lost money in this ballpark (-$395). We?ll pass for now. PREFERRED: None.
Atlanta at Arizona (2) 18th, 19th
Jair Jurrjens has looked sensational since rejoining the Atlanta rotation (+$335, 1.50 ERA in five starts) and looks like a solid value here at Chase Field. PREFERRED: Jurrjens.
Milwaukee at San Diego (2) 18th, 19th
The Brewers are only 6-15 on the road (-$895) but the Padres are 7-14 here at Petco Park (-$800). PREFERRED: None.
San Francisco at L.A. Dodgers (2) 18th, 19th
The Giants are slumping at the plate (.235 team BA) and their lefthanders could be vulnerable vs. an LA squad that is 6-3 (+$300) vs. southpaws in 2011. PREFERRED: Dodgers vs. lefthanders.
Detroit at Boston (2) 18th, 19th
We?d use the Tigers against a lefthander, but it appears unlikely we?ll get that opportunity. Can?t trust the Red Sox at the moment (only 16-18, -$1105 at the present time). PREFERRED: None.
Tampa Bay at Toronto (2) 18th, 19th
The Rays have been a solid money-maker outside of Tropicana Field (+$895) and Toronto is 10-15 (-$415) against righthanders in 2011. PREFERRED: Righthanders vs. the Blue Jays.
N.Y. Yankees at Baltimore (2) 18th, 19th
The Orioles are winless against New York in four attempts (-$400) and their league worst pitching staff (4.57 ERA) looks like no match for those Yankee bats. PREFERRED: Yankees in both games.
Cleveland at Chicago W. Sox (2) 18th, 19th
The White Sox took 2 of 3 at Progressive Field to start the season, but since then everything has been going Cleveland?s way. They check in with a huge overall profit (+$1445) and should exact some revenge vs. hapless Chicago. PREFERRED: Indians in both games.
Texas at Kansas City (2) 18th, 19th
The Royals are averaging 6.7 runs per game vs. lefthanders so far, and they?ll likely see at least one southpaws when the Rangers visit Kaufman Stadium. PREFERRED: Royals vs. lefthanders.
Minnesota at Oakland (2) 18th, 19th
The A?s took 2 of 3 earlier (+$130) and their team ERA is two full runs lower than Minnesota?s. PREFERRED: Athletics in both games.
L.A. Angels at Seattle (2) 18th, 19th
The Mariners have lost money at Safeco (-$410) and LA checks in with a 9-3 road record vs. righthanders (+$850 with 5.9 runs per game in those contests). PREFERRED: Angels vs. righthanders.
Stick with the home team in this one. BEST BET: Nationals vs. righthanders/Lefthanders vs. the Marlins.
