EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (AP) ? A standardbred horse escaped from Meadowlands Racetrack and ran down a road with his sulky before being captured in a restaurant parking lot.
Tavio, a 4-year-old pacer, had just completed a training run on the track Monday at about 7:30 a.m. (1230 GMT) when another horse spooked him. Both tried to escape through the open stable gate, but only Tavio got free, said his trainer, Jean Drolet.
Tavio ran down Paterson Plank Road, running against traffic before crossing the road at an intersection and heading toward the restaurant.
The horse, which was not seriously injured, traveled more than a half-mile (one kilometer) before being corralled by passers-by, who held him in the lot until Drolet arrived.
"When I saw the police and they told me he didn't hit anything, I was so happy,'' Drolet told The Record of Bergen County on Tuesday.
