you were correct, Joe Lieberman is a pretty dam conservative Democrat. He got edged by Lamont mainly because of Iraq war. Lieberman was down 14 points, and closed to lose by I believe 4. He is a pretty likable guy, but many Connecticut people are upset with him for a variety of reasons, 1 has to do with his plan for school vouchers busing kids to different schools. Another was his running for Senator still at same time as running as Gore s vice president. Many thought that was selfish putting himself ahead of Democrat Party. There are other things also, I forget some, mainly petty stuff, but that coupled with Lamont running strictly on getting out of Iraq did Lieberman in.
I'm not sure how much of a Democrat Lamont is, he is a multi millionaire corporate guy so I doubt he is a Howard Dean guy, but I could be wrong.
