Smarty Jones was not his original name. Pat Chapman submitted the name Get Along when registering the foal with the Jockey Club. After a change of heart, Chapman changed it to the nickname of her own mother, who shared the same birthday as Smarty, Feb. 28. Chapman had to pay $100 to get the name changed.

Smarty's winning Preakness time of 1:55.59 was faster than the winning time posted by Funny Cide (1:55.61), Red Bullet (1:56.04), Tabasco Cat (1:562Z5) or War Emblem (1:56.63), to name a few.

Smarty's winning Preakness time was not as fast as Spectacular Bid (1:541Z5), Affirmed (1:542Z5), Seattle Slew (1;542Z5), Real Quiet (1:543Z5) or Silver Charm (1:544Z5), to name a few.

Smarty is just more than 15 hands high. Rock Hard Ten is 17 hands high.

Smarty wears a white bridle with a German Martingale attached, designed to give the rider more control and keep the horse's head down.

At 1:45 p.m. Preakness Day, Smarty's odds were 1-5.

Smarty is 1-for-1 in New York, having won the Count Fleet at Aqueduct by 5 lengths on Jan. 3.

Servis' pre-race instructions to jockey Stewart Elliott: "Looks like the same race as the Derby. Good luck." The two then talked about "everything but the race."

The back of Servis' Smarty Jones cap reads: "We're Jonesin"'

Servis' father, Joe, was a jockey at Charlestown Race Track in West Virginia. His mom would take her three kids in their pajamas to the track early in the morning.

My boss thinks Elliott looks like Lyle Lovett.

After being on the Sports Illustrated cover two weeks ago, Smarty is featured in Time this week.

When Smarty returned to Philadelphia after the Kentucky Derby, he received the first 2004 Haskell Invitational hat. The $1 million race is Aug. 8 at Monmouth Park. Servis' brother, Jason, trains a stable of 35 horses at Monmouth.

If Smarty wins the Belmont and remains undefeated through his 3-year-old campaign, he would join War Admiral (1937) and Count Fleet (1943) as the only Triple Crown winners to do so.

When Smarty's dam, I'll Get Along, was bred to Elusive Quality, stud fee was $10,000. The Chapmans paid $40,000 for I'll Get Along. Investment: $50,000. Return: $7.3 million. So far.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, a man registered the Web address smartyjones.com and posted the domain on EBay with a "buy it now" price of $139,500. This was before the Preakness.

Elliott wore the logo of Argent Mortgage on his pants for the Preakness. Elliott is giving some of the money to groom Mario Arriagas and other workers.

Mark Reid, who had trained for the Chapmans, helped convince the couple to send Smarty to Servis, his former assistant. Now a bloodstock agent, Reid found Medaglia d'Oro for Bobby Frankel.

When Servis told the Chapmans he wanted to take Smarty Jones to Arkansas for prep races, Roy Chapman said, "That's the last place I want to go." Smarty went anyway.

After Elliott described his Preakness strategy and trip, Roy Chapman said, "People said Stewart was a novice rider. If that sounds like a novice rider, I'll kiss your ass."
