MORE TIME
The Indians took the easy way out yesterday when they put Wil Cordero on the disabled list. But in the near future, they're going to have to make a decision among pitchers Steve Woodard, Jake Westbrook and Charles Nagy.
Cordero had a growth removed from his left hand on June 10 and hasn't played since. The move was retroactive to June 11, which means Cordero can come off on Tuesday.
"This gives us a little more time to make a decision on our pitching," said Manuel, who has a 13-man pitching staff.
Woodard and Westbrook have options and can be sent to Class AAA Buffalo. Nagy, a career starter, has been moved to the bullpen to make room for Chuck Finley, who was activated and started last night.
The problem is that Woodard and Westbrook have pitched well in relief - Woodard as a long man and Westbrook in a variety of roles - while Nagy is unfamiliar with his new job. Nagy, however, has tenure.
He has no options left and cannot be traded without his permission. The Indians could release him, but they'd have to pay him his full salary - $6 million this year and $6 million next year.
The bench, minus Cordero, is down to Russell Branyan, Jolbert Cabrera and Tim Laker.
