Family Member Charged With Toddler Death At Tysons


TYSONS CORNER, Va. (WUSA) -- A toddler has died after police say a family member threw her from a walkway at Tysons Corner Center.

A Fairfax County Police Department spokesperson says the two- year-old girl fell about four stories from a walkway at Tysons Corner Center Monday at 7:10 p.m.

When the fire department and emergency crew arrived, the child was conscious and alert. She was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. Officer Tawny Wright, spokeswoman for Fairfax County Police, says the child passed away around 4:30 Tuesday morning.

According to Wright, investigators have 50-year-old Carmela Dela Rosa, a family member, threw the toddler from the walkway. Wright says it is unclear what prompted the woman to commit the violent act.

Wright says Dela Rosa was charged with aggravated malicious wounding Monday night. Those charges have been upgraded to murder.

Dela Rosa appeared in Juvenile Domestic Relations Court via video conference Tuesday morning. She does not have an attorney and will be appointed one.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for January 4.
