NEW YORK Now that Time Inc. has turned over documents to federal court, presumably revealing who its reporter, Matt Cooper, identified as his source in the Valerie Plame/CIA case, speculation runs rampant on the name of that source, and what might happen to him or her. Tonight, on the syndicated McLaughlin Group political talk show, Lawrence O'Donnell, senior MSNBC political analyst, claimed to know that name--and it is, according to him, top White House mastermind Karl Rove.


i wonder why bob novak got a pass on this one?....he was the main culprit....i don`t think judy miller even wrote a column...

Newsweek: Rove gave Time reporter OK to testify

Top presidential adviser Karl Rove was the anonymous source who released a Time reporter from his promise of confidentiality, allowing the journalist to avoid jail, Newsweek says.

In a story published today, Newsweek reveals more details about the celebrated case stemming from the leak of an undercover CIA agent's name in 2003.

The publication of Valerie Plame's name by Chicago Sun-Times syndicated columnist Robert Novak set off an investigation because it's a crime to knowingly identify an undercover CIA official.

Prosecutors trying to find who leaked Plame's name wound up issuing a subpoena to Time reporter Matthew Cooper. He also was working on a story involving Plame in 2003 and wound up facing jail because he wouldn't reveal his secret source.

At the 11th hour last week, Cooper got permission to talk from his source -- identified by Newsweek as Rove.

The magazine said Rove's lawyer confirmed that he gave Cooper the OK to testify before a grand jury.

Newsweek quoted an e-mail from the reporter to his boss that showed Rove had discussed Plame and her husband, Joseph Wilson, a former ambassador, with Cooper.

It was Wilson who went on a CIA-sponsored trip to Africa to learn about Iraq's alleged attempts to buy uranium there.

He subsequently criticized the Bush administration on the Iraq war, a move that critics think led the administration to leak his wife's name as punishment.

Newsweek says that while the e-mail shows that Rove talked to Cooper about the couple, the e-mail doesn't suggest that Rove revealed Plame's name or CIA status.

The Newsweek article quotes Cooper's e-mail as saying, "it was, KR said, Wilson's wife, who apparently works at the agency on wmd [weapons of mass destruction] issues who authorized the trip."

So It's come out now for sure that he told a Time reporter that Joseph Wilson's trip to Niger was authorized by his wife, who worked at the CIA.

It's a crime to disclose the identity of a CIA agent. So Rove's done, right? Slap on the cuffs? Off to jail?

Well, not really. Despite giddy Democrats absolute joy at the thought of Rove being charged, it's not going to happen.

Let's look at the facts, shall we?

1.) According to Newsweek, none of the reporter's notes indicate Rove gave Valerie Plame's name. Without a name, Rove's off the hook.

2.) If he did give the name, that violates something called the Intelligence Identities Protection Act. That act makes it a crime to disclose the identity of a "covert agent."

What does that mean?....................

3.) No one has publicly established whether or not Valerie Plame (Wilson's wife) was even a covert agent. A covert agent is defined by the law as an agent who has served outside the United States in the last five years. If she was an analyst riding the WMD desk at the CIA, that's not a covert agent.

So if Rove didn't give her name, he's clear. If he did give the name and she doesn't meet the definition of a covert agent, he's clear. But I'm sure you guys won't let this one go, though.

Also, expect more Democrats to want to start an impeachment inquiry. It's all they've got these days.

He said Monday that to violate the law, Rove would have had to know Plame was a covert officer; intentionally disclose that fact; and know that the CIA wanted her covert status kept secret.

"It's extremely difficult to violate that law and to prove a violation," Davis said.

Fox news seems to think where there is smoke there is fire--will be interesting to see how it pans out--

Funny defense by the White House.

'Ohhhh, well, yes we lied about Rove having no involvement at first. But now that we're caught we have to say that Rove did indeed talk to a reporter, but he didn't mention the agent by name, he only mentioned that it was the wife of Joseph Wilson, he he didn't name her though.'

2 things stick out here to me....

1)that joe wilson really hates the bush administration....and was caught in numerous lies to hurt them....

2)that if rove gave out plame`s name to sources to hurt wilson for his anti-administration stance,then,that`s scary....i`m aware of the allegation that plame offered up her husband`s name for the niger trip in 2002...

still,rove....in his high level position with the administartion,should never put himself in such a position with a journalist...

to what end would he release plame`s name?...and could any benefit received by such an action outweigh the potential risks of giving opponents this kind of ammunition to run with...

i have to admit,this kind of poor judgement at this level is very worrisome...

Carl Berger was a dumbass Dem and he got roasted for taking home classified documents. He probably should have gotten more of a penalty than whatever he did get though I don't know WHAT penalty he got.
