Ranger defenceman Marc Staal, who dressed for Game 3, then suffered a vision setback that caused him to be scratched for Game 4, would not get into the details on Friday morning about what happened.

"As the day went I just couldn't see myself getting into a game situation," he said after skating with the team, but not with the idea of playing in Game 5 Friday night at the Verizon Center. "It's tough; you are excited to get into one and then have to sit out the next. It hasn't been an easy road."

Staal refused to speculate on whether he could still return in this 2-2 series.

"I'll get up in the morning and go at it again," he said.

Staal has suffered blurred vision and altered depth perception since he was hit above the right eye on a deflection of a puck shot by Philadelphia's Kimmo Timonen on March 5. Staal missed 36 games a season ago with a concussion.

With Steve Eminger again dressing in Staal's place, there will be no other changes in the Rangers lineup.

Washington coach Adam Oates confirmed that Tom Wilson would take the place of Martin Erat, who injured his wrist sliding into the goal in the first period of Game 4. Wilson, the Caps first pick (16th overall) in the 2012 draft, will play with Jay Beagle and Matt Hendricks on the fourth line.

"We're looking for a spark," said Oates.

Erat, meanwhile, was not looking for a dressing down from the coaching staff, refusing to talk about the results of his MRI or speculate about a possible return in the playoffs.

Plus for the caps being able to control the matchups with last change and Eminger being put back into the line up. NYR really doesn't want Eminger on the ice with Backstroms line
