Sudan - America Must Act Now

A few months ago marked the tenth anniversary of the Rwandan genocide.

One of the darkest marks on this country and the world is the 1994 slaughter of almost one million Tutsi Rwandans. After swearing "NEVER AGAIN!" in reference to the Holocaust (a U.N. Convention for all countries to stop genocide), the world stood by and simply watched. We. Simply. Watched.
Well, everybody just watched except for France. That's right. France.

But it's not what you think. France armed the Hutu's who were committing the genocidal murders. Then, the French government sent troops to create a safe zone. And the genocide continued in the French safe zone.

There is plenty of blame to go around. Too many lawyers in our own government prevented anyone from using the word "genocide" because it would legally cause us to commit troops to stop the violence. Too many politicians used words like "not in our national interests" and failed to commit immediate resources to the U.N. Director of Peacekeeping, Kofi Annan. Canadian General Dallaire begged, BEGGED, for armed troops. Instead, he received tens of unarmed observers - observers that were killed whenever they tried to stop the maddness. Observers that were ordered by the U.N. to not intervene (ten Belgian soldiers were mutilated, tortured and killed trying to stop the murder of a moderate politician).

The Sudan is rapidly descending into something more horrible than Rwanda. The Washington Times has an article today about Sudanese developments:

Sudan accused of ethnic cleansing
ADRE, Sudan, Jun. 18 (UPI) -- Many of the victims of the violence in Sudan told ABC News they believe they were subjected to ethnic cleansing because they are black.

Last year, black rebels demanded better treatment for impoverished Darfur from the Arab-dominated government in Sudan's capital, Khartoum.

In its response to quell the rebellion, the government ordered villages where the rebels were thought to be hiding bombed and supported an Arab militia known as the Janjaweed. As a result, 350,000 are dead, 1 million people have been displaced into refugee camps and for hundreds of miles there is nothing but empty villages.

Many of the refugees have testified that Janjaweed attacked only black Sudanese villages, often bypassing Arab villagers.

The Sudanese government has denied the allegations.

"The Arabs attacked first, then the government planes came and shot at us," a 13-year-old girl told ABC.

The Sudanese government said the casualties were part of its legitimate right to fight a rebel movement and the civilians were merely caught in the middle, ABC said.

The Sudanese Arab government is pushing the Sudanese African tribes out of the fertile territories. They've been shooting the fathers and throwing out the mothers and the children. It's ethnic cleansing, racism, and genocide all wrapped into one big mess.

This problem in the Sudan isn't something that will get cleaned up quickly. Khartoum is a rotten government with dark aspirations.

And don't expect the U.N. to do it's job and protect the innocent. Especially, don't expect soldiers in U.N. sky blue berets to protect the Sudanese Africans from Human Rights violations.

Why?

Because Sudan is a member of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. That's right. I think the same guy that gave a Nobel nomination to Arafat put Sudan on that Committee.

It's time for unilateral action by the USA; otherwise, we'll have a situation worse than Rwanda. There isn't any politics in this - you are either for standing by and watching it happen or sending in the 82nd Airborne Ready Brigade and the Marines. Right now, projections are that about 500,000 children are in danger of dying from starvation, disease, and being hunted down by the Sudanese government.

And, folks, that's just the children...

You can help by visiting the British Red Cross and donating to help keep these people alive.

Chanie:

This topic was discussed last night on NOW with Bill Moyers. I know most of you were watching the preliminary pilots for the anticipated next episode of "Who wants to marry my dad" and probably missed this program. After all, some of you could have learned something from watching this show. We can't have that now can we.

Whats happening in Sudan is horrible and probably makes Iraq look like a Sunday afternoon at a Reds game. Very sad. But don't worry, the big felon in DC is organizing an invasion of Sudan as we speak. The big Texan is a big proponent of human rights and will punish these African "evildoers" much the same way he punished the Asian "evildoers" in Iraq.

You just wait and see. The big Bushman is on the way to liberate those Sudanese woman and children in Darfur. Rumsfeld, Cheney and Wolfiwitz are working on this country's next liberation effort. As we all know, that is the reason we invaded Iraq.

God is talking to Georgie right now. Lets listen in. Who knows, maybe we will also find some weapons of mass destruction. I'll bet Sadam rented a couple of u-hauls and moved them under cover of darkness (that sneaky guy) to Darfur when we weren't looking from Iraq.

C'mon everyone. I'll be the first to call for a draft to fortify our military and build a groundswell of support for our invasion of Sudan. C'mon everyone, c'mon aboard. Lets liberate the Sudaneese. Let's go....... get rid of the evildoers. Bring em on.

Uhhhhh. Where is everyone? Hello. Is anybody out there? You who. C'mon American people lets go with the same vigor we hopped on ships heading to Iraq. The boat is getting ready to go for the liberation of the Sudaneese people. Hurry up.

The hypocracy of those who support this war and the murders leading it will never be more evident. The war criminals in DC who have orchestrated the murder of tens of thousands in the last year and a half shoudl be on trial and not running for re-election. The only person laughing harder than I am at this complete moron, dufus, religous psycho we have in DC is Osama Bin Laden. This country is in the f***ing toilet.

Nice job republicans. nice job. you've destroyed my country.

Called tough love, pumpkin. Sometimes the truth is a little hard to take especially when you have to admit that you have been conned.

I'd love to respond to your post had it made any sense whatsoever. You have manure for brains.

While these past 4 years certainly haven't been our shining moment as a country, I wouldn't say we're 'in the toilet.' The 2 term limit law is a stroke of brilliance as it would take more than 8 years to totally destroy ourselves. This group is making a good run at it though.

But besides that, any thoughts on whether we should try to take care of this horrible problem in Sudan? Does anybody really care, or is it like Iraq where people only start to care when they're told to by our government?

Yela:

I can see it now. Cheney hides a speaker behind the big purple Barney the dinosaur baloon in the oval office while Georgie is watching Fox news while sitting on the floor with his legs crossed eating cheese its and drinking apple juice.

Dick speaks into the Mr. Microphone in the anteroom of the oval office in a big, booming, echoing voice, saying "There is no oil in Sudan, there is no oil in Sudan". Georgie looks up to the ceiling, has an epiphany, and decides we must stay the course in Iraq.

This may not be that far from the truth.

Kosar:

My opinion on the state of this country is not only based on what the current criminals have done. Like Reagan, I think they have hastened the demise of this country and the good things it stands for. The problems go way back. They encompass both parties and the greed of corporate america.

Little guys need to get it back. 25% interest on credit cards, corporate raping of shareholders, let me screw you before you screw me attitudes, etc. We have allowed criminals to run the country and corporations.

Your point about Americans getting excited about Sudan when the government (and I might add media) tell us too was beautiful. I wonder how many Americans knew the name of Sadam Hussein before the gulf war. My bet is under 5%.

This country is all perception and flag waiving without substance. Thats why everybody watches Who wants to marry my dad instead of public tv and/or other shows wherein a person may actually learn something.

I love it when I open a thread and all I read is the whining, crying, and lamenting from the left on how bad this country and it's leaders are. I know we are definitely doing things right when their rhetoric gets so vile, like eddie's:D

Thanks guys for making my day and you all have a good one too:spotting: :Yep: dance1 :thumb:

Clowntown:

I've seen some moderate viewpoints but nothing yet from the left. I guess your right though, its makes me want to throw out my chest bursting with pride in this country after all the good we have done in Iraq over the last year and a half.

I mean I just want to hum America the Beautiful when I think of all those sand nigger women and children our boys have chopped up with our missles, tanks and other weapons of mass destruction while we were liberating them. What do we got now 10 to 15k dead Iraqi's? Excuse me, 10 to 15k dead liberated Iraqis.

Yep. I'm so proud. I'm all welled up with tears. Dinosaurs like you need to become.......... er .................... dinosaurs.

By the way, are you Chanman? Your thread? Funny, I had you pictured as lilly white about 5' 6" weighing about 260 with a genetically attached beer can in your right hand and not oriental.

Like I said, I love it to see you so pissed, thanks man:D

Once again your vitriolic rantings and personal attacks only serve to show how intolerant (that OK eddie) you are and how the right is winning the hearts and minds of the American people.

Thanks again eddie, and keep 'em coming ole buddy, your a hoot:D

I'm a hoot? I hate when people call me a hoot. I am not a hoot. I am Godlike but not a hoot. You know you turn me on when you use big words like "vitriolic". Do you think in your next pearl of wisdom you can work in one of my favorite big words from the 90's.

That would be "salacious". Thanks in advance Ctown. I think the right has the hearts and minds of the American people. I just wouldn't use the word "winning". Conning would seem to be more appropriate. In addition, that only goes on to prove that the majority of people are, like you, stupid and further proves that when you own the gold and the medium to con the majority, you win.

Thats why you watch the Batchelor and Who wants to marry my dad. By the way, what did Nick do on the Newlyweds last night?

I think you guys fail to realize how far right the republicans have gone. My father who owns guns, believes in the 2nd Amendment was for years basically what they call a Rockefeller Republican. Fiscally conservative with a somewhat liberal social outlook. He basically has given up on the party. I recall during Bob Dole's run for the Presidency he was talking with Barry Goldwater and made the remark about how they could almost be considered liberals. A sarcastic dry remark to be sure but telling. I guess it doesn't matter, in the end we are all socialist commies.

Don't you know anything. AR and I are only two centrists/moderates who semi-regularly post in this forum. Why cant you see that?

Eddie

65,

That's one of the great things about this forum. There are a lot of independants/centrists who try to always see both sides of the issues. AR 182, for example. And also we have Eddie, DJV, Myself, Auspice, JT, Bjfinste, Hoops, Yelajakitz, Slim Pickins, Madjackson, Shamrock, Stevie D and some others. It's refreshing to see so many people that don't see things politically, but practically.
