Mike Fratello, the most defensive-minded coach in the
league next to Larry Brown when Larry Brown is serious,
leads the visitor. Avery Johnson, a guy who has an
NBA Championship ring powered by superior team defense when
he played for San Antonio -- leads the home team. So the
books can't make this total low enough for us.
Both game plans involve stopping the other side's leading
scorer and forcing other guys to step up. Which somebody
may do, but more than likely at a slower-than-average pace,
against pretty good teams of perimeter defenders, including
the long arms of Eddie Jones on Memphis and Jerry Stackhouse
on Dallas. The Mavericks' low-post defense, with Dampier and
Diop, is pretty effective, too, and they have a thing against
Pau Gasol, who torched them for 33 points in this season's
first meeting, then averaged only 17 against the Mavericks
in the next three games.
