if you want to agree or disagree, post your reply and show us why either way.

loewer

has been around the minors for 6 years. saw very little action in 99 and 00, and this year started in A, went to AAA, and now makes his first major league start at the age of 27. this year he has been quite active, compiling a 1.59 in A ball in 11 innings, then a 1.96 in AAA in 18 innings. has been averaging 6 innings in AAA.

so now he makes his first appearance against none other than seattle at home. tough assignment.

what can be expected of a rookie's first start? that's what s.d. is wondering. my best guess is that he will go about 4-5 innings and get touched for 3-4 runs. s.d. probably expects something along those lines and have the firemen lined up to pick up the pieces.

halama

are you ready for this one? despite a so-so 5.37 era for the year, he has been rocked hard in 3 of the last 4, for a 4 game era of (roll the drums)........around 13. yet the line is at -210. go figure.

this is my best bet. s.d. +190 **
and over 10 *

Pep -

Allow me to make some corrections here. Carlton Loewer is NOT a rookie, and has started 34 games in his Major League career, all of them with the Phillies in 98 and 99. He came to San Diego in the offseason before last in the Andy Ashby trade. About a month after the trade he fractured his leg in a hunting accident and then developed shoulder problems which wiped him out for the entire 2000 season. He has made 6 starts in the minors on a rehabilitation assignment, and went 1-1 with a 1.96 ERA for AAA Portland.

Saw an interview on local TV last night and he says he is 100% healthy and seemed eager to resume his career. FWIW....

i hear you. i extracted his minor league record. anyway, his 98-99 record was not pretty, and i look for more recent performance. halama makes anyone look good, and he seems to be in the perfect spot here for his return.
