pretty quiet in here with all the football action, so i thought i'd post up my favorite hoops play of the day.
loyola md. -5: getting some decent value here as the greyhounds dropped their season opener at towson friday, burning a lot of bettors, including me. that loss, coupled with the marquee effect of the penn team, gives us a nice number on the home fav today at noon.
but this is not the same penn team of past ivy championships. the quakers are picked third in the ivy this year, having lost three starters to graduation who were all three time all-ivy first teamers, including two time ivy poy ibrahim jaaber. last year those three accounted for over 43 pts, 16 rebounds and 10 assists per game. penn has no significant returning frontcourt, and will have to rely on freshmen to burn plenty of minutes under the basket.
meanwhile, loyola comes into the season with a solid veteran nucleus that is picked second in the preseaon maac rankings, narrowly edged out by sienna for first. they are led by all-conference g gerard brown, last year's maac leader in pts and assists.
greyhounds were stung by the loss at towson and appear eager to redeem the high expectations for the season in their home opener today. coach patsos summarized afrer friday's loss:
We didn't play real well and had some early jitters, but one game does not make a season. We have two games over the next four days to show what this team can really do."
