MIAMI (Quantrill) +115 over ATLANTA (Wentz)

The Marlins did drop a double-header to the

Braves yesterday, but we do like their chances

in today's series finale. No pitcher in baseball

has won more than Cal Quantrill (+$1335 in 22

outings) and he is backed by a Miami team that

has made a fortune in day games (+$1795). The

Braves have lost each of the four games started

by Joey Wentz (-$400) and their overall losses

have been massive (-$4210). Take the underdog

price on the road team in this one.

BOSTON RED SOX +116 (Bello) At San Diego (Cease) We’ve said some nice things about Brayan Bello lately, haven’t we? Let’s check our history, from Aug. 4: “Bray an Bello had a 2.87 ERA for June, 2.79 ERA for July. On July 19 and July 25, he pitched well enough to win against the NL’s two top-hitting teams, Cubs and Dodg ers, but the Red Sox lost. The lineup he faces tonight [Kansas City’s], while on an up-tick lately, remains the lowest scoring team in the American League (3.67 runs per game).” He went out and made us look smart with 6 innings of 6-hit, 1-run ball, 5-1 K-BB, in an 8-5 win. The Red Sox scored 5 runs in the bottom of the first against Bailey, who Faltered. They probably won’t score 5 runs in the first inning against Dylan Cease, who has thrown shutout ball in 5 1/3 and 5 innings, with 9-1 and 10-0 K-BBs, in two of his last four starts. That’s 9 and 10 Ks in only 5 and 5 1/3 innings. But the Padres are ahead of only Colorado and Pittsburgh in the National League in runs per game.

MILWAUKEE BREWERS -112 (Priester) Vs. NY Mets (Manaea) Like John Candy in Splash, “Something works for me, I stick with it.” Broken Record of the Day is us telling you that the team with the best record in MLB, the only team with at least a .600 win percentage (up to .621 after last night ), is only a -112 lay against a visitor who was 25 31 on the road entering this series against a 36-20 home team, hadn’t played in this ballpark yet this season, and is now 0-2 after the first two games of the series. Maybe Manaea and the Mets’ pen outpitches Priester and the Brewers’ pen, avoiding being swept. Hope not! Young Priester has discovered a new level. You’d have thought that his 6 innings of 3-hit ball at Dodger Stadium on July 18 would be the tipping point for a regression for a 24-year-old who was unwanted by the Pirates, then Red Sox, last season. But the mighty Quinn’s elevated form has mostly held and the Brewers have won a ridiculous 12 straight games when he starts. Today puts them onto a generally unlucky number but we shall see, won’t we?

OVER 9.5 The Athletics at Baltimore (Morales vs. Povich) We’ll stay in this ballpark and hope for more of the same we received yesterday from the untested starters, who allowed a total of 5 runs in the first inning, 4 in the third, and then the Baltimore relievers allowed 5 in the fifth. Luis Morales is another rookie throwing for the Athlet ics, age 22. He pitched 2 innings last week and gave up 3 hits and a walk. Good luck to him, some other time. Cade Povich is not a rookie. But after a 5.20/1.43 ERA/ WHIP in his rookie season last year, his current 5.25/1.45 WHIP might earn him a trip back to the minors soon if he keeps pitching to it. It would be nice if one of the manag ers of these out-of-it squads can once again find “that guy” in the bullpen who helps scoreboards explode.
