Sunday's best NBA bets

Boston Celtics at Toronto Raptors (-1, 198)

There is still a large gap between the Celtics and the Raptors in the Atlantic Division. But the way Toronto is playing, Boston has to feel the hot breath of the Dinos on its neck.

The Raptors won their third straight game and eighth in their last nine contests against the Philadelphia 76ers Friday night. Toronto battled back from an 11-point second-half deficit to win 108-106 as a 2-point road underdog. The victory was also the team?s seventh cover in those last nine games.

All-Star forward Chris Bosh came up big, completing a 3-point play in the final seconds to give the Raptors the win. Bosh, who finished with 29 points, was under fire from his coach, Jay Triano, heading into Friday. Triano pointed out to reporters Bosh?s inconsistent efforts, specifically his 18-point showing against the Orlando Magic earlier in the week.

"I think he was a little bit bound and determined to get the ball there," Triano told reporters of Bosh?s game-winning play. "We'd gone away from him on a couple of previous plays and he had asked for the ball. But I just didn't want to play our hand too soon."

Toronto's lone blemish during this stretch was a 103-96 loss to the Celtics in Boston last weekend. The Raptors are thirsty for another crack at the division leaders, especially at home where they are 12-5 this season, covering in 10 of those games.

Pick: Raptors

Miami Heat at Los Angeles Clippers (-1.5, 194)

With the Lakers losing back-to-back games, the hottest team in La-La Land doesn?t sport the purple and gold.

The Clippers are riding a three-game winning streak, getting their most recent win at the expense of their STAPLES Center roommates Wednesday. They face the Heat at home Sunday, where they have won five games in a row.

?This is a very important stretch for us and we need to come out and have a sense of urgency," Clippers forward Craig Smith told reporters.

The team?s defense has been behind this winning run, allowing just under 92 points per game during those five home contests. The Clippers held the Lakers to 38 percent shooting after watching opponents hit shots at more than 45 percent and score more than 98 points per game this season.

"We're right there in that position; we can't really afford to come off these big wins and fall back with a tough loss," Smith said. "We've got to keep building, keep climbing the ladder. That's what it felt like in practice today, that guys are ready to take the next step."

Pick: Clippers

Who's Hot, and Who's Not

Who's Hot, and Who's Not

Who's Hot, and Who's Not

In terms of sports betting, we?ve compiled a list of several teams that are either on the rise, or on the decline in the NBA. Keep your eyes open for favorable match-ups as you?ll likely be able to find some line value with/against these teams. We also included various notes about teams/trends that will assist you in your NBA wagering.

HOT

After starting the season with a 1-8 record, Memphis has completely turned things around. They?ve gone 16-8 (and more recently, 7-1) to get back above .500 and be in early talks as a surprise playoff contender. They?ve scored over 100 points in ten of the last eleven games and boast the overall 5th ranked offense in the NBA.

The Spurs are 11-3 SU after their alarmingly mediocre start to the season (9-9). They are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 and it looks like the Spurs are bound for the playoffs for the 13th straight year. Ten of their next 14 games are at home so expect them to be favored a lot in their upcoming games.

Charlotte is playing good basketball right now. They?ve won five of their last seven games and are 9-3 ATS in their last 12. They are still three games below .500 for the season, but the time is now if they want to make a move as six of their next seven games are at home (12-4 SU this season).

NOT

The Celtics are just 4-8 ATS in their last 12 games. They?ve recently been bitten by the injury bug with Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett all missing time due to injury. They recently lost three straight games for the first time since January of 2009.

Denver is another team that can accredit their recent struggles to a horde of injuries to key players. Chauncey Billups, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Anderson have each missed time. They are just 3-11 ATS and just 6-8 SU in their past 14 games. They are fortunate that 7 of their next 9 games are at home, where they are 14-3 SU this season.

Atlanta jump started the season on an 11-1 ATS run. They continued that hot streak to a 19-6 ATS start in the first 25 games, but they?ve hit a bump in the road. In the last eight games, they've had a four game losing streak and are just 2-6 SU and 3-5 ATS.

Boston, Denver and Atlanta?s recent struggles are all miniscule when compared to the issues that the Detroit Pistons are currently facing. Detroit has lost 10 games in a row and they are 1-9 ATS in that stretch. They have the 2nd worst defense in the NBA. It won?t get much easier for the poor Pistons, who play 8 games in the next 15 days.

Notes:

After just 12 home losses in the past two seasons, Utah has already lost 6 this season. You may be able to find some value against the Jazz when they play at home throughout the season.

Phoenix is just 3-3 in their last 6 home games after posting 10 straight home wins to begin the season.

The Kings were one of the pleasant surprises early in the season, starting 9-8. Since then, they have struggled, winning just 5 of their last 17.

Looks like the oddsmakers are being a little too generous with the Mavericks. They are one of the better teams in the NBA and are 10-4 SU in their last 14, but they are just 5-9 ATS in that same stretch.

Injuries have plagued a number of teams this season. The Celtics, Nuggets, Trail Blazers and Pacers are the teams that have lost KEY contributors for an extended period of time.

Phil Jackson believes friendly gambling is a great pastime

Phil Jackson believes friendly gambling is a great pastime

Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson doesn't support banning players from gambling on team flights, according to a report Saturday by the Associated Press.

Jackson spoke before Friday?s game versus the Trail Blazers in response to Nets president Rod Thorn taking action in light of the Gilbert Arenas incident by forbidding his players to gamble on the team plane.

The dispute between Washington teammates Arenas and Javaris Crittenton began with a card game on the team plane following a West Coast trip on Dec. 19.

The Wizards were the first to ban team gambling and Thorn said, ?It's obviously not good for the league and the team,? but Jackson had a different view of the matter.

"It's just a PR thing, personally," Jackson said. "What are these players going to do when they get back to their hotels, when they are in their own space, even their houses? They?re going to go their rooms and gamble. I think maybe on the planes would be a better spot for that because it could be monitored. It hasn?t been a problem.

"We have guys that play, four or five guys that play. They seem to have a wonderful time. It seems to be a great release for them, a pastime."

Jackson admitted that he used to play cards with teammates when he played for the Knicks during the 1960s and ?70s. He said that he wasn?t a very good player, but enjoyed the camaraderie and entertainment.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers shared Jackson's sentiments.

?I am not going to that extreme,?? Rivers said about banning gambling. ?I think we always overreact to that stuff. Gambling didn?t cause that problem, Gilbert?s actions caused this problem. There has been gambling before I got in the league. There?s been arguments and obviously, because guys make more money now, the stakes are higher. But, having said that, our rule on the plane is they can do whatever they want as long as they keep it under control. They are going to have some arguments every once in a while, but if it divides the team, then it?s a problem.??

In the wake of the Arenas situation, the NBA told The New York Times that the league is looking into tightening restrictions on gambling among its players.
