Three plays from the second round of Super 12. More plays than normal in a single round of a rugby tournament, but I like these so will play them. Also treading dangerous ground in backing teams on the road conceding points, but these teams have the class to overcome that hurdle.

Chiefs vs Highlanders (Friday 06:35 AM GMT, Waikato Stadium, New Zealand)

The Chiefs opened up last week with a defeat at the hands of the Otago Highlanders, while the travelling Auckland Blues stunned stunned the Aussies with their drubbing of the New South Wales Waratahs.

Most will look to possibly the most dangerous back trio in world rugby in the Blues wingers Joe Rokocoko, Malili Caucaunibaca, and full back Doug Hewlett, and say that they will have too much for the Chiefs. This may be true, but believe me this match will not be won or lost in the backs. The Blues pack should and will dominate this contest. The Chiefs have decided to drop hard forward Paul Miller, and this will not help their cause. If the Blues can dominate as expected, then it should leave their backs with plenty of time to release their speed men outside. Note that Carlos Spencer is set to start the game, and should the Chiefs be as ill disciplined as they were against the Highlanders, then we could well see a repeat, with Spencer bagging a hatful.

1 Point Auckland Blues (-12) at 5/6 with Stan James

Cats vs Waratahs (Saturday-17:10 PM GMT, Bloemfontein, South Africa

The Cats were stunned last weekend by the Bulls first Super 12 win in two years, while the Waratahs endured a equally woeful defeat by the Auckland Blues.

Although, both suffered defeats in round one, the Waratahs were beaten by a much better outfit, and can blame the weather conditions as a reason for their defeat. I stated that they may struggle due to the huge influx of rugby league players in their back line. This will improve as the tournament progresses, and hugh winger Lote Tiquiri can look forward to the dry hard pitches of South Africa, as opposed to the wet conditions he had to face last week.
The South Africans, without a victory at home in five outings, can hardly point to home advantage as a factor, but as ever, will field a big physical pack who will be out to beat up the Waratahs, but should the Aussies edge the physical encounter, then the league boys in the backs should be able to finally display the skills, and win the game.

1 Point Win Waratahs (-5.5) at 9/10 with Canbet

Sharks vs Brumbies (Saturday-15:05 PM GMT, Durban, South Africa)

The Sharks were crushed by the Western Stormers in the opener, while fourteen men ACT Brumbies held off the Queensland Reds.

With the sudden emergence of the Bulls, the Sharks may well finish bottom in this Super 12 campaign, with a South African team certain to occupy the bottom spot by the end of the season. Poor pre-season form, was followed by that heavy defeat last weekend. Although the Brumbies have never won in Durban, they are easily the better of the teams. The Brumbies face a lot of road games this season, and will not want to be losing to teams like the Sharks in a hurry. Georgie Gregan looked as sharp as ever, last week, while the backs were always looking to run the ball. If the Brumbies forwards get enough ball from the ever physical South Africans, the likes of Larkham, Roff, and Mortlock can break holes in the defence, and ensure handicap backers go home happy.

Sharks 25-17 Brumbies
Cats 36-48 Waratahs

Firstly let me apologise for a poor 1-2 weekend by my standards, including only my third ever two point loss.

It should perhaps have been a 2-1 weekend, Chiefs backers can count themselves very lucky, as the Blues played 75 minutes of the game with 14 men, but still came out with the win. This suggests that the Blues would probably have covered, but I am not in the habit of making excuses.

:nono:

Meanwhile, by all accounts the Brumbies were very poor against the Sharks. Few could have predicted the sudden re-emergence of the South African teams in these first two weeks. The Bulls win in New Zealand must go down as one of the stories of the season....we have a team without a win in two years, winning their first game and then travelling to New Zealand to defeat a Kiwi team on their home soil for the first time in ages. However, this is a good thing for world rugby, because world rugby needs proud rugby nations such as the Springboks to remain competitive.

Finally, let me spare a word for Anders. He will be missed in this section of the site, as his contributions were always appreciated. He was against me on two of these plays this week, which was a bad omen.

Six Nations thread will be updated tonight, as I believe I have found some value early ahead of the weekends matches. ;)
