Supreme Court justice to perform same-sex wedding ceremony

Washington (CNN) - In June, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg joined four of her Supreme Court colleagues in overturning the federal law defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

This weekend, she is poised to officiate at a same-sex wedding.

The couple is Michael Kaiser, president of Washington's Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and economist John Roberts. John Dow, vice president for communications at the Kennedy Center, told CNN the couple would be married on Saturday by Ginsburg.

Ginsburg?s role in the ceremony was first reported Friday by The Washington Post, which said she spoke about it in a recent interview.

?I think it will be one more statement that people who love each other and want to live together should be able to enjoy the blessings and the strife in the marriage relationship,? the Post quoted her as saying.

The ceremony will take place in Washington, where same-sex marriage became legal in 2009. Thirteen states and the district allow same sex marriage; it is banned in 35 other states, and two do not have laws on the matter.

The Post reported Ginsburg said ?it won?t be long before there will be another? same-sex marriage ceremony performed by a member of the high court, and that she will perform another in September.
