The Syracuse Orange (3-0) will host the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies (2-1) on Monday night at the Carrier Dome. Game time is 7 p.m.
Syracuse is coming off an 80-67 win over Texas Southern on Saturday. Oakland suffered an 87-74 loss at Toledo on Saturday.
Oakland went 25-9 last season and captured the Horizon League's regular season title.
Syracuse and Oakland last met on Dec. 22, 2009 with the Orange coming away with a 92-60 victory at the Carrier Dome. Syracuse leads the all-time series 2-0.
The starting lineups
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim has used the same starting lineup in each of the Orange's three games, plus the two exhibitions.
Boeheim figures to go with this lineup again tonight: guards Frank Howard and Tyus Battle, forwards Matthew Moyer and Oshae Brissett and center Paschal Chukwu.
Oakland has four players who have started each game. Guard Kendrick Nunn (6-3, Sr.) and forwards Martez Walker (6-6, Sr.), James Beck (6-8, Fr.) and Isaiah Brock (pictured, 6-8, Soph.). Nunn leads the Grizzlies' offense at 28 points per game. Walker averages 24.3 points per game.
Brailen Neely, a 5-9 sophomore, started the first two games of the year, but 6-1 senior Nick Daniels moved into the starting lineup in the Grizzlies' game at Toledo on Saturday.
Jim Boeheim, Coach K and Greg Kampe
At the beginning of this season, the longest-tenured coaches at their current schools were Syracuse's Jim Boeheim (41 seasons), Duke's Mike Krzyzewski (37 seasons) and Oakland's Greg Kampe.
Kampe is in his 34th season at Oakland University where he has put together a record of 585 wins and 425 losses.
The Grizzlies' big scorer
Oakland has gotten terrific offensive production out of Nunn, a former University of Illinois guard. Nunn, a 6-3 senior who sat out last season, is averaging 28 points per game. He had 36 points in his Oakland debut against Fort Wayne.
Nunn scored over 1,000 points in his three years at Illinois. He was named to the Big Ten's All-Rookie team as a freshman. He averaged 15.5 points per game as a junior before being dismissed from the school following his guilty plea to a domestic abuse charge.
Oakland's Jalen Hayes to miss game
Oakland senior Jalen Hayes will have to sit out Monday's game against Syracuse as he completes a four-game suspension imposed by the NCAA.
Hayes, a 6-7 forward, averaged 15.9 points and 8 rebounds last year for the Grizzlies.
The NCAA's decision to suspend Hayes is a curious one and has drawn some criticism. In the spring semester, Hayes received a 2.5 grade in a class in the school's human resources development program. Oakland requires that students in that major receive a 2.8 or better to receive credit for a class.
Even though Hayes met all NCAA academic standards, the NCAA suspended him for failing to advance toward his degree. This despite the fact that Hayes is scheduled to graduate this December.
The NCAA originally suspended Hayes for the entire fall semester. On appeal, the ruling was reduced to four games.
