GAME NOTES: The Syracuse Orangemen, ranked 12th in the country entering the
weekend, seek to exact some revenge on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights this
afternoon as the two squads meet at the Carrier Dome for the regular season
finale. Syracuse has just four losses the entire season, but one of them came
against the Scarlet Knights in a 68-65 setback in late January. And with that
victory Rutgers took a small bite out of SU's advantage in the all-time series
which now stands at 26-9, with the Orange holding an 8-4 lead in games that
have been played since both schools became part of the Big East Conference.
Syracuse puts its perfect 16-0 record at the Carrier Dome this season on the
line this afternoon, not to mention an overall win streak that has reached six
games thanks to a spirited 92-88 victory over the 16th-ranked Notre Dame
Fighting Irish on Tuesday night on the road. A win today would be Syracuse's
1,600th in program history, and mark its first undefeated home season since
the opening of the Carrier Dome in 1980. Conversely, Rutgers has won only
twice in 11 tries on the road this year, which makes the Scarlet Knights the
underdog in this one by a considerable margin. The Knights are coming off a
75-59 setback versus St. John's at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night,
the team's fifth setback in the last six outings. As far as their respective
spots in the West Division of the Big East is concerned, Syracuse is tied with
the seventh-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers, who are in action this afternoon
against Villanova in Philadelphia, at 12-3. Rutgers on the other hand is down
at the bottom with a mark of 4-11.
Like a number of schools that have had to face St. John's this season, the
Scarlet Knights failed to execute a plan on how to stop Marcus Hatten who
planted 44 points on Rutgers in a 16-point loss to the Red Storm on Thursday
night. In that contest, Jerome Coleman and Ricky Shields combined to score
half of Hatten's output, as both players tallied 11 points, although Coleman's
production proved to be much more costly because he shot only 4-of-16 from the
field and 2-of-10 from behind the three-point line. Coleman saw his shooting
percentage drop even lower to a dismal 35.3 percent on the year and is hitting
just 29.4 percent from behind the three-point line. But even with those subpar
stats he still leads the team in scoring with 16.3 ppg. He is followed in
double figures by Shields and Herve Lamizana with 11.7 and 10.6 ppg,
respectively. The team as a whole is shooting a miserable 39.7 percent from
the floor this year and just 64.5 percent at the free-throw line, which ranks
it among the worst in the nation.
The play in the first half proved to be the difference in the contest on
Tuesday night, as the Orangemen shot a blistering 57.9 percent from the field
and held nationally-ranked Notre Dame to just 33.3 percent, leading to an 11-
point lead for Syracuse at the break. Although the Irish made a comeback
following the intermission, they still couldn't take the lead and fell by four
points at home. Freshman standout Carmelo Anthony posted his third straight
double-double which consisted of 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Billy Edelin
came off the bench to lead the unit with 26 points on 13-of-20 shooting from
the field. Also hitting for double figures were Gerry McNamara with 20 points
and Hakim Warrick who finished with 14 points, a game-high 13 rebounds and a
team-best seven assists in the victory. Anthony, who averages a robust 22.2
ppg, second-best among the nation's freshmen, and leads all rookies with 9.8
rpg. Anthony has led Syracuse in scoring in eight of the last nine games,
failing to post fewer than 21 points in any of the outings.
Usually the Orangemen fill up their non-conference schedule with a bunch of
patsies, but as luck would have it the schedule has worked in their favor this
year to have the Scarlet Knights coming to the Carrier Dome for the regular
season finale. The only question is how long does Syracuse leave the starters
in before getting them ready for the conference tournament this week.
