So much has been made about TV ratings lately and who is outperforming who.....MNF, World Series, Michael Jordan....etc....

With the invention (lol) of the remote, I would think that these "ratings" are obsolete.....

Not many people I know sit around and watch the same station when sports are on and hardly ever stay tuned to the commercials.....I never do anyways.....just wondering what ya'll do?

Great point!

TV ratings ALWAYS shortchange sports (in other words, the ratings are always much higher than the numbers indicate). Consider that all the viewers in bars, sportsbars with satellites, casinos, and sportsbooks are NOT counted. I predict that if you were to add all the OUTSIDE VIEWERS (people not in their homes), major sporting events would have 2-3 million ADDITIONAL viewers for each game (meaning Monday Night Football is ALWAYS more watched the "Friends" or other slop). Furthermore, these ratings are still done by survey (1960s mthodology), which get higher responses from females, who are customarily non-sports viewers. Translation: The NFL is overwhelmingly the most popular thing on TV and has been for 20 years. I do believe the World Series is not even as popular as a mid-season MNF game in terms of viewershipo -- but tonight's Game 7 may be the exception and should garner huge ratings. I also suspect that many viewers wil have TWO TVs going at once.

Excellent points Nolan. I for one have 3 tv's on at the moment and usually always have 2 for sports.

I agree and also take into account that while downstair hubby and perhaps a few friends is watching MNF, the misses in the master bedroom is probably watching Ally McBeal while the kids in another room if they have a third is watching some show on the WB or MTV or whatever. Know what I mean Vern?
