MOUNT PLEASANT -- After losing its first game of the 2002 season, the Central Michigan University football team will try to get back on the winning side of the ledger with a road game at Boston College on Saturday, September 28.

Kickoff in Alumni Stadium is set for noon (EDT).

The Chippewas are now 3-1 after a disappointing 39-29 loss at Indiana University on Saturday. CMU held a 26-16 lead at the half, and had the ball on the Hoosier nine with a 29-16 lead in the third period and fumbled.

"We had the opportunity to put this game away," said CMU head coach Mike DeBord. "We didn't take advantage of those opportunities, and we gave Indiana life.

"The one thing we've done all season is finish. This time, we didn't finish. We gave away opportunities but we didn't give up. Our players battled to the end with everything they had."

The Chippewas are going to need that type of effort with a little better finish against Boston College.

"This is definitely the best team we've played," DeBord said. "It's a top 25-type program. Just look at the game it gave No. 1 Miami."

"You're going to have two football teams trying to regroup. Which one does the best job will be the key."

Boston College is 2-1 after a 38-6 loss at Miami. However, the Eagles trailed by just four points, 10-6, at the half.

DeBord likes the character of his team, and feels it will be ready for Boston College.

"I like our attitude," DeBord said. "We're not going to let one loss push us backwards. I like the way our team reacted after the game, and again in practice on Sunday."

Boston College will be the Chippewas' third straight road tilt after opening the season with a pair of home wins.

CMU will be idle on October 5 before a Homecoming matchup with undefeated Bowling Green on October 12. The Chippewas close the season with seven straight MAC contests, four of them in Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

The Coaches

Central Michigan -- Mike DeBord (Manchester, 1978). Career record: 8-18 (three years). CMU record: same. Boston College -- Tom O'Brien (Navy, 1971). Career record: 31-28 (six years). Boston College record: same.

The Series

This is the first meeting between the two schools.

Boston College is 6-3 all-time against current schools in the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles are 5-2 against Buffalo, 1-0 against Northern Illinois and 0-1 against Ohio.

The Chippewas are 0-1 against teams from the Big East, falling at Syracuse in 1999 by a 47-7 margin.

Last Week: CMU

The Chippewas dominated the first 35 minutes, holding a 29-16 lead with the ball at the Indiana nine.

However, a fumble gave the Hoosiers the ball, and eventually the momentum needed for a 39-29 win. IU scored the final 23 points of the game.

Indiana held a 531-461 edge in total offense, passing for 316 and rushing for 215. Senior HB Robbie Mixon (Detroit/Denby) broke the 100-yart barrier for the third time this season, rushing 24 times for 154 yards. Junior Kenan Lawhorne (Miami, Fla./Coral Park) gained 90 yards in 19 carries as CMU rushed for 263.

Junior QB Derrrick Vickers (Miami, Fla./Pace) hit on 18-of-36 passes for 198 yards and two TDs.Senior Rod Means (Inkster/Robichaud) grabbed four passes for 53 yards.

CMU did run 84 plays to Indiana's 75, and had one turnover to two for the Hoosiers.

DeBord on Boston College:

"We're playing an outstanding football team in Boston College. It likes to mix things up on offense with a good balance of the run and pass. It has good size up front and is loaded with talent.

"On defense, it likes to play a lot of fire zone where it will blitz and play zone coverage. It plays hard and aggressive with great effort on defense."

Last Week: Boston College

It was a close game in nearly every category but the scoreboard that read Miami 38, Boston College 6.

The Eagles led 3-0 and 6-3 in the first half before the Hurricanes rattled off 35 unanswered points.

Miami held a 393-285 edge in total offense.

Brian St. Pierre completed 14-of-24 passes for 138 yards, and added 22 yards in nine carries. The leading rushers were Derrick Knight with 57 yards and Brandon Brokaw with 50.

Scouting the Eagles

BC opened the season with home wins over Connecticut (24-16) and Stanford (34-27).

QB Brian St. Pierre has completed 55-of-93 passes for 637 yards and four TDs. Jamal Burke is his favorite target with 10 grabs for 111 yards while Keith Hemmings has nine for 138.

Derrick Knight has carried 55 times for 266 yards.

The Eagles are averaging 345.7 yards per game on offense while holding their opponents to 311.7.

Chippewas in the MAC

Central Michigan was picked to finish sixth in the West Division of the conference standings by the MAC News Media Association, trailing Bowling Green, Toledo, Northern Illinois, Western Michigan, and Ball State, and ahead of Eastern Michigan.

Marshall was tabbed to win the East, and then capture the MAC championship game to be played on December 7. The East champ will serve as the host.

Chippewa Training Room

CMU has lost two players in early drills for the season -- cornerback Richard Kiel (Detroit/Murray-Wright) and offensive guard Dean Zarafonetis (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Northern) with knee and shoulder injuries, respectively.

Defensive lineman Caleb Anthony (Ludington) is also out for the season after undergoing back surgery in the offseason.

Starting halfback Terrence Jackson (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) had surgery to repair a broken bone in his right foot at the start of fall drills. He returned to practice last week, and could see action this week.

Junior defensive end Ike Ajoku (Brooklyn, N.Y./Tech) and sophomore safety Jon Nelson (Lake Zurich, Ill.) have not played this year because of leg injuries.
