This is a great analogy of our taxes and how we pay them (or at least some of us)

Worth a minute to review!! Here's the deal.................

Top 1% earn 21% of all income; pay 37-1/2% of all taxes
Top 5% earn 35% of all income; pay 56-1/2% of all taxes
Top 10% earn 46% of all income; pay 67% of all taxes
Top 25% pay 84% of all taxes
Top 50% pay 96-1/2% of all taxes
Bottom 50% pay 3-1/2% of all taxes
Just in case you are not completely clear on this issue, here is an old
story that I hope will help to explain our US Tax System.......
Tax Cuts - A Simple Lesson In Economics - This is how the cookie
crumbles !!!!!!!!!!!!
Please read it carefully. Let's put tax cuts in terms everyone can
understand.
Suppose that every day, ten people go out for dinner.
The bill for all ten comes to $100.
If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something
like this:
The first four people (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh $7.
The eighth $12.
The ninth $18.
The tenth person (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that's what they decided to do. The ten people ate dinner in the
restaurant every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until
one day, the owner threw them a curve. "Since you are all such good
customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily meal by
$20." So, now dinner for the ten only cost $80. The group still wanted to
pay their bill the way we pay our taxes.
So, the first four people were unaffected. They would still eat for free.
But what about the other six, the paying customers? How could they
divvy up the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share'?
The six people realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they
subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth person and the
sixth person would each end up being 'PAID' to eat their meal.
So, the restaurant owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each
person's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out
the amounts each should pay.
And so:
The fifth person, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings.
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% savings).
The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four
continued to eat for free.
But once outside the restaurant, the people began to
compare their savings.
"I only got a dollar out of the $20," declared the sixth person. He
pointed to the tenth person "but he got $10!"
"Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth person. "I only saved a
dollar, too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I got!"
"That's true!!" shouted the seventh person. "Why should he get $10 back
when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!"
"Wait a minute," yelled the first four people in unison. "We didn't get
anything at all. The system exploits the poor!"
The nine people surrounded the tenth and beat him up.
The next night the tenth person didn't show up for dinner, so the nine
sat down and ate without him. But when it came time to pay the bill,
they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money
between all of them for even half of the bill!
And that, boys and girls,
journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works.
The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax
reduction.

Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may
not show up at the table anymore !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vote or DIE!

Viva Bush! ;)

So true Bigbud!

IRS Figures show that Kerrys contention that the rich are not paying their fair share and should be taxed more are are just not true. Remember these are IRS released figures.
Top 1% pay 33.7% of all taxes
Top 5% pay 53.8% of all taxes
Top 10% pay 65.7% of all taxes
Top 25% pay 83.9% of all taxes
Top 50% pay 96.5% of all taxes

The following percentages measure the taxes paid by each group divided by their income.

Top 1%--27.5%
Top 5%--22.95%
Top 10%--20.51%
Top 25%--16.99%
Top 50%--14.66%
Bottom 50%--3.96%

When you give tax breaks. Guess who is going to benefit the most? The people that are paying most of the taxes. Who else? The group that is paying 3.96% of thier income?
Just another one of Kerry's scare tactics.
VOTE BUSH!!

They go to dinner.

Yeh thats wonderful.

To put it another way the rich guy has 500 bucks to pay his $59 and he don't give two chits about it.

The poorest people who pay nothing, have two bucks in their pocket for another round of cokes.

whoopy diggity

and you call that fair.

A long time ago in the stone age people used to trade items for a living...they would have to barter for every transaction

They spent so much time bartering instead of working that some guy got the idea "maybe we should start using currency"

Well, they evolved enough to use currency and guess what? Transactions and productivity increased and supply and demand took over the markets.

Today, we are for some reason, trying to devalue all currency by making it not worth the effort to make. We are taking a huge step back economically.

We have liberals and socialist Utopians to thank for this. They are trying to turn us into Great Mother Russia.

The people are voting themselves other people's money. And politicians are taking advantage of this greed.

God help us all.

Just a question to the group and partisanship aside: What would a fair tax percentage be?

The other day on the radio, during the talk show, a guy who said he was voting for Kerry because the rich were not paying enough.

The host promptly said "how much do you think a guy making 2 million should pay then?"

The caller pondered a moment or two and thought about it and replied "about a hundred thousand seems fair".

The host was real respectful and said, thank you for your opinion and good day sir.

He never mentioned that a guy making 2M is taxed pre-deduction about 900K. 9 TIMES what the guy who thought the rich weren't paying their fair share -- were already paying.

Where does the citizenry get such ideas in their head?

Listen to one particular party's candidates and you have your answer.

Who exactly is misleading the country?

You guys are simply incredible! Real deep thinkers. Why don't we just back to feudalism while we are at it? I suggest you think carefully about what it takes to have a STABLE society.

I suppose you resent paying school taxes those of you who don't have kids. Sorry but I prefer not to see hordes of homeless roaming the streets. What kind of society or community neglects their elderly and children?

Grow up and realize your neo-con right wing fantasy world is comic book stuff. I am amazed at how much your bleeding hearts cry for the poor rich people who have to pay their taxes, awwww!

Nobody is protecting the rich, just voicing their opinion against the bashing of high income earners. And feudalism is actually an elitesque way of rule, much like what the left would like to impose.

The real problem is the use of "sentimentalism" as a way of persuading people to give up their personal power to an elite group whose ultimate goal is simply the attainment of power. This is the liberal way. Your words are good, therefore I trust you.
Sentimentalism, political correctness, etc. are sides of the same coin. Most every human being will agree on the need to protect our elderly and children BY THE GOVERNMENT. It is not specific to one particular partisan side. And the attack on those most favored in a society is a dirty weapon used since ancient times by those intent on obtaining the same benefits as those who they criticize.
We are blessed in this country where the standard of life at the poverty level is above most country's middle class. Yet we still freely allow those at poverty level the opportunity of reaching higher income levels and benefits. Living in poverty here is not exactly bliss, so don't misinterpret. But the opportunity to improve does exist, as difficult as it may seem for some.

I strongly doubt any government of this country or any community would allow hordes of homeless children to roam the streets. Any government that would allow that here would most definitely be of left wing orientation. Oh, and I, as perhaps others here, have seen hordes of homeless children wandering streets in other places and nobody doing a thing about it. Those governments are called "corrupt".

As for thr "Neo-con right wing fantasy world being the stuff of comic books", please explain your concept of "neo-con". I thought those were the hawkish pre-emptive war folks. Yeah, that is comic book stuff allright, made up by supposedely sentimental liberals preaching utopia to the guilt-ridden and naive pusillanimous unable to fend for themselves nor their families through fair and concrete means. :soapbox:

Subject: the Kerrys & the Clintons

>Bill, Hillary and Kerry are flying on Kerry's wife's private jet. Bill looks at Hillary, chuckles and says, "You know, I could throw a $100.00 bill
out the window right now and make somebody very happy."

>

>Hillary shrugs her shoulders and says, "Well, I could throw ten $10.00 bills out the window and make 10 people very happy."

>Kerry says, "Of course then, I could throw one-hundred $1.00 bills out the window and make a hundred people very happy."

>The pilot rolls his eyes, looks at all of them and says to his co-pilot, "Such Big shots back there.....

I could throw all of them out the window
and make millions happy." :142lmao:

That's real fine Nosigar...you see, this country attained the great conditions you just described under these supposedly horrible tax laws that are so unfair to the wealthy. YOU JUST PROVED MY POINT!

Its these "deep thinkers" that want to suddenly radically change the tax structure that MADE us the great country we are. Do you guys remember reading about the Robber Barons 100 years ago?

Do you know why workers unionized? Do you know WHY Communism rose in Russia? THINK and quit throwing around the word LIBERAL to colorize your pseudo-intellectual RIGHT WING FASCIST theories. (See I can whip out the Fascist word too)

so ocelot I assume you are not in favor of a flat tax? What bothers me is I come from a very humble background, worked hard, went to school -> had to take out loans that I am still paying to better myself because I did not want to settle. Why should folks who hustle and better themselves to make more money pay more?

Dude, you lost me. I've never said anything about being against taxes, they are necessary.
And I din't think I wrote fascist. Nazi, maybe, since Nazi means National Socialism, or a definite left wing ideology.

See, the problem with most "centrists" is they don't read nor care about anything else 'cept their own retrograde ideals. This country was built on progressists, not right wing whacko's nor pinko liberal radicals. I am a progressionist.
And mostly, this country has maintained is greatness by abiding and respecting civilized laws.

Pseudo-intellectual, geeeze. Is that the best you can come up with. You wish you were one.

I just don't see how these figures can be construed to be bad or unfair.

One of my coworkers was talking the other day. She is single (maybe shacked up with bf now, not sure) and has 2 children. She makes about 21K a year. She was talking about how the rich got all the tax breaks and that's why she's voting for Kerry. I asked her how that affected her since she pays no taxes, ie, she gets it all back and more in her refund filing that head of household way. She didn't know, of course, she's only able to repeat the rhetoric she hears on MSNBC.

Maybe it's better to make less sometimes??? Wouldn't it be great if your gross pay equaled you net pay?? I wouldn't know what to do with myself.
