I know it doesn't do any good to discuss the umpiring the last game...
but the balls/strikes were absolutely ridiculously awful... seriously.

The rest of you saw this.. right?
I think that was the crew chief also, right? Gerry Davis I think... ? :0002

he was calling strikes on balls that were 6 inches inside or outside, or low, or high and tight, or way off the plate... often it was for strike 3!!
And other times, the same pitch, same area... was called a ball... NOT consistent.

Thinking back.. to the 1st game (maybe was 2nd?).. that ump was great!
If the ball hit the "strike zone" that is superimposed over home plate, he called it a strike, and when it missed he called it a ball... consistently.
That is what the umpire is supposed to do.
An inch or 2 here or there over the course of the entire game is one thing...
a few close misses can be expected, they are not computers.

I personally officiated sports for about 12 years... some years was 4-5 nites, 3 gms a night.
so I do have a little perspective on the subject.
There are a lot of politics involved at the higher levels of officiating, getting assignments, "going along and not challenging the powers that be" was always a factor... always.
Just because someone has been umpiring for 20 yrs or whatever does not mean he's a better umpire than someone that has been umpiring for 2 years... another reality.
anyway... bk to it.

My main point:
the ball/strike umpiring in Gm 5 was shameful and embarrassing to the integrity of the game in my opinion.

everybody says, "well as long as he's consistent"... he was NOT.
he was bad... but seemed a little more so against the Dodgers, in some crucial situations, might be my impression there, but he still stunk.

I didn't keep track of all the bad calls he made... who knew it would be so bad??
I wonder if someone went back and tallied on how many BAD .. Wrong.. TERRible ball/strike calls he made throughout the entirety of the game.. ?
just based on the superimposed image on the screen... I'd venture a guess it was in the vicinity of 20-25+ pitches.... strictly a guess, might have been a lot more!

Either way, he should NEVER be allowed to umpire behind the plate in a World Series again...
he might be a nice guy, and trying to do his best.. maybe.. don't know a thing about him.

But he was AWFUL... and MLB should do better for the showcase of it's sport!!

It makes hitters swing at pitches they think are out of the strike zone because the ump might call it a strike... it gets pitchers out of an inning when they should be walking someone.. etc.
And his poor performance can change the outcome of a game based on his ineptitude, which is why they have instant replays on out/safe on the bases. We ALL want the call to be correct.

I don't want computers to call balls/strikes, just the GOOD human umpires, Not the bad ones.

I don't know, maybe he's good at calling out and safe on the bases...?
most umps are, and if they aren't then instant replay gets it right.

But NEVER EVER put him behind the plate... ever again ... please.
no matter who is playing... ever again.

needed to get that off my chest

not sure if I feel a lot better lol, but I hope the ump tonight/tomorrow does a better job.
Enjoy the game everybody! :0074
