In the Nfl it's an illegal forward pass, not a fumble.

Years ago Vincent Jackson famously caught a ball for a first down and went to the ground untouched by the opponents. He got up and spun the ball in celebration and the other team jumped on the ball claiming fumble; But since he spun it forward it was ruled an illegal forward pass, 5 yard penalty, Chargers kept the ball.

yeah I had this argument with my friend. there was this example, but I also remember when Plaxico Burress was a rookie, there was an infamous incident where he caught a pass and got up and spiked the ball. Why wasnt that considered an illegal pass as well?
